Thomas McDevitt Obituary

Thomas K. McDevitt, age 87, of Cincinnati, OH passed away on Saturday, June 4, 2022. Thomas was born on January 23, 1935 in Cincinnati. He is remembered with love by his sister Eileen Nicolet, his step-children Juliann (the late David) Long, Rosanne (Michael) Tinsley, Luan (Peter) Martin, and Daniel (Krista) Eckelman, eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; his thirteen nephews and nieces: James, Steven, Father Daniel, Gregory, Jonathan Utrecht, Teresa Schmelzer, Mollie Jameson, Patrick, Michael and Timothy McDevitt, André and Paul Nicolet, and Elizabeth Maeyama. He is preceded in death by his wife Rebecca McDevitt, his parents James A. and Susan K. McDevitt, along with sister Susan M. Utrecht and brother James P. McDevitt.

Tom was a veteran of the US Army, serving as 1st Lieutenant (1958-1960).

Tom was a 1957 graduate of Xavier University, and subsequently in building materials and plastics sales throughout his career.

Tom was an avid athlete, privileged to have played on the undefeated 1952 Purcell High School football team, the 1953 Purcell state champion baseball team, one year of basketball and three years of baseball at Xavier University, as player-coach on the Army Air Defense national runner-up basketball team, and subsequently being an active sportsmen throughout his life with softball, skiing, and tennis.

Tom participated throughout the years in the Knights of Columbus, Williams YMCA, the Ancient Order of Hibernians, the Friendly Sons of St Patrick , and the Cincinnati Ski Club.

When not actively playing sports or cheering on his favorite teams, Tom greatly enjoyed his luncheons with the “Duct Tape Five”, the Purcell Luncheon Group, and his Ski buddies.

There was not a Cincinnati festival that Tom did not attend, not a German or Irish drinking song for which he did not know the words, and there was never a moment that he was not ready to enjoy either a Guinness or sauerkraut (or both), always with a bright smile, a humorous recollection, and an invitation to the next festival, while accommodating the schedules to enjoy XU basketball, the Reds and Bengals.

Tom will always be loved and remembered as a gentle man as well as a Gentleman, a man with a big heart and a kind soul, a man of great faith and firm beliefs, a proud yet humble man, a man with dignity, integrity and respect. He was a loyal friend to all and a family man we all deeply loved and were proud to call a Wonderful Gift from God. He will live in our hearts forever and raise our souls to the heavens. Thank you Tom for the love you shared and the love we will cherish and hold dear to our hearts forever.
