Richard Rieger Obituary

Dick Rieger passed away peacefully on November 28, 2023 at the age of 93 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Lydia Rieger, his three children, Jane Rieger, Anne Matthews, Rick (Susan) Rieger, Lydia’s son Mike (Vicki) Haas and daughter Melissa, and three grandchildren, John Michael Rieger, Katie Rieger and Matthew (Chi Lê) Rieger. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy H. Rieger, his brother Tom Rieger and his parents Harold and Jane (nee Siegfried) Rieger.

Born in Toledo, Ohio on July 24, 1930 the family later moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan. He graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1948 and attended Michigan State University on a combined ROTC and tennis scholarship where he studied Chemical Engineering. Dick was the captain of the Michigan State tennis team that won the Big 10 tennis championship in 1951. After graduating from Michigan State in 1952, he married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Hotop.

They moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico where he served as an Army 1st Lieutenant at Sandia Base on a top secret nuclear weapons program during the Korean War. After his active duty military service he held the rank of Captain in the inactive Army Reserves. After being discharged from the Army he joined Union Carbide as a sale representative and moved to Cincinnati, Ohio. Later, he ran his own company, RHR Enterprises, that specialized in hot stamp foils.

Dick was a natural athlete and soon found the game of golf. He was invited to join Maketewah Country Club in 1961. He was a member at Maketewah for 62 years where he won a club championship. He continued to play his beloved game of golf as recently as October in an ORFs (Old Retired Folks) outing. He enjoyed putting with the Xavier University golf team at Maketewah during the winter months where he joined his fellow ORFs for weekly lunches. Additionally, in his retirement, he joined the Great Lakes Senior Golf League and traveled to many of the finest golf courses.

In addition to golf and tennis, he enjoyed the symphony, politics and football. He was an original Bengals season ticket holder. A devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, Dick will long be remembered by those he so dearly loved.
