Ralph B. Kohnen Jr. held city, state offices Rebecca Goodman | Cincinnati Enquirer HYDE PARK - Ralph B. Kohnen Jr. - a lawyer who served in the Ohio General Assembly, on Cincinnati City Council and as chairman of the Hamilton County Republican Party - died Thursday of congestive heart failure at Hyde Park Health Center. He was 72. Mr. Kohnen served five years in the Ohio House of Representatives. He won a seat on City Council in 1967 and served three terms. He also served as Cincinnati's vice mayor. He was chairman of the Hamilton County Republican Party from 1986 until 1991. He was a son of Ralph Kohnen, a Hamilton County Common Pleas judge, and Helenrose Hillenbrand Kohnen of Batesville, Ind. He was a member of the St. Xavier High School Class of 1953, and attended the University of Fribourg in Switzerland before receiving a bachelor's degree from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. He attended the Institute for International Law at The Hague, Netherlands, and received a bachelor of laws degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Law. He served in the Army in 1960 and 1961. After his military service, he joined law firm Waite, Schindel, Bayless & Schneider and made partner four years later. In 1974, he co-founded with his brother, David, the law firm of Kohnen & Kohnen, which is now Kohnen & Patton. His son, Daniel Hillenbrand Kohnen, died in 1993. Survivors include his wife, Anne Bolduc Power; two sons, Ralph W. Kohnen of Hyde Park and Allen S. Kohnen of Oakley; a daughter, Nan Kohnen Cahall of Mariemont; a stepson, Mark Santoro of Cincinnati; a step-daughter, Jaime Bitzenhofer of Cincinnati; two brothers, David A. Kohnen of Indian Hill and John Kohnen of Oakley; three sisters, Ann Marrocco of Indian Hill, Clare Cahill of Hyde Park and Debbie Lynch of Anderson Township; and five grandchildren. Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Gilligan Funeral Home, 2926 Woodburn Ave. in East Walnut Hills. Mass of Christian burial will be 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Xavier Church, 607 Sycamore St., downtown, followed by a reception. Burial will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Montgomery.
