Joan Elizabeth Schoeny (Grunkemeyer) was the youngest child in the Grunkemeyer family. Her mother, Anastasia (Brennan) and father Charles; siblings Anastasia (O’Brien), Charles, Ruth (Queen) and Jane (Schoeny) were close throughout her lifetime.
Growing up in Pleasant Ridge, her vocal and dramatic talents were noticed at an early age. Picked to play roles in plays and performances throughout school, her lead role as “Jo” in Little Women at Regina High School was a source of great pride.
Joan met her husband, George Schoeny, her sister Jane’s brother-in-law, shortly after his return from WWII. They were happily married for nearly 55 years and were blessed with eight children: Ken (Marty) Schoeny, Sally (Rod) Coombs, Carol (Andrew) Guarino, John (Ann) Schoeny, Mark (Yan) Schoeny, Steve (Linda) Schoeny, Mary (Jeff) Thomas and Chris Schoeny. There was never a dull moment…
Even while busy raising a family, Joan’s musical talent could not be denied. She was the soloist at St. Vincent Ferrer Church and her full and powerful voice moved the congregation for over 40 years! Her love of music inspired her children and grandchildren to pursue their musical talents.
Joan loved collecting and decorating with antiques - the hunt and bargaining brought her much delight. Even as her dwellings downsized, her passion was unrelenting. This enthusiasm lives on in her children.
Family trips camping and, later in life, winters in Florida and trips to Cape Cod brought her joy. She had many friends from the Dig and Dream Kenwood Garden Club and was active in leadership roles and fundraising efforts.
Joan will be remembered as a devoted, wife, loving mother and doting grandmother to Tiffany, Alexandra, Katie, Samantha, Aaren, Prissy, Drew, Tara, Matt, Kevin, Kathryn and Caroline, and great-grandmother to 10. Joan’s quick wit, sense of fun, and warmth earned her a special place in the hearts of her family.
To each member of her family, you were her favorite. Always there to listen and advise, she knew just what to say no matter the situation. Her love and support will be sorely missed.
