Obituary

Jane Patricia (“Pat”) Carew Shannon was born March 13, 1930 in New York City, New York. The adored and only child of Jane (“Jean”) and Gerald Carew, Pat graduated from the Ursuline School in New Rochelle, New York and earned a degree in Psychology at the College of New Rochelle. Though Pat never used her psychology degree professionally, it came in handy with her Kindergarten students that she taught as well as raising the eight children she eventually had!

Wearing a blonde wig and a blue dress, Pat met the love of her life in college at a Halloween party and later married Dan in 1953. Dan’s job with Union Carbide provided Pat and their young and growing family with many adventures while moving to states including Kansas, Illinois, and California with several returns to New York.

In 1969, Dan was permanently assigned to Cincinnati, Ohio. Following Dan’s retirement, he and Pat enjoyed traveling to many countries around the world.

Family was a priority for Pat. She was involved in various clubs and programs at the schools her children attended. Pat instilled in her children the importance of caring for others through her actions and volunteer work including being Room Mother at Indian Hill Elementary and All Saints Schools, CCD instructor at All Saints, All Saints Festival Chairperson, and a 3-time president of Moeller High School’s Mother’s Club. She was an active supporter of the Moeller High School Band. Her volunteer experiences extended to St. Joseph Home of Cincinnati and Pregnancy Center East.

Pat demonstrated her love of God and her faith as a long-time active parishioner at both All Saints and St. Gertrude Parishes. She continuously supported the priests and novices of St. Gertrude while also participating as a lector, lay distributor, funeral sacristan, and member of the Ladies of Charity.

As her children became more independent, Pat returned to the workforce at Chatterlings, the Acorn and Talbots. She was consistently helpful to those she assisted and made many dear friends through this work.

Pat was an avid golfer who only began playing when the family moved to Cincinnati. For many years she played 18 holes every Wednesday; however, as time went on, she found her niche with the “9 holers” at Maketewah Country Club. She was a member of their bowling league during the winter months as well! She inherited and developed the Christmas Yule Log tradition at Maketewah Country Club bringing families together to celebrate the holiday season. She was a proud member of the “Mak Mavens” and enjoyed attending their luncheons greatly.

In her 90s, Pat joined and enjoyed her Silver Sneakers workouts at the Blue Ash YMCA three days per week while inspiring younger members to understand the importance of exercise regardless of age.

Pat was an amazing woman! Always surrounded by her family, Pat could be caught playing gin rummy, hitting out a bucket of balls, going to the Nature Center to fish, painting pottery, blowing glass ornaments, attracting butterflies at the Krohn Conservatory, being a “MacGyver” at fixing things, planting flowers with her magical green thumb, or trying new adventures without hesitation.

Pat was reunited in heaven with her husband, Dan, while surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, July 30, 2023. Pat was also preceded in death by her son, Kevin, and her daughter-in-law, Terri. Pat leaves behind 7 children: Trisha (Ted) Leugers, Dan (Lily), Jean, Gerald (Heidi), Brian, Kate (Andy) Czupik, and Mary Beth, twenty-six grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

Be it her generous spirit, never ending love of the Catholic faith, her kind words, or the simple twinkle from her beautiful blue eyes, Pat will be dearly missed by all.

A celebratory Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 11, 2023 at 9:30am at St. Gertrude Catholic Church, Madeira, Ohio, preceded by a visitation from 8:30 - 9:30 am in the St. Gertrude Parish Center.
