Elizabeth "Betty" (Busse) Schulenberg died peacefully on August 12, 2023, at the age of 98 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was born on October 10, 1924, to Joseph and Ida (Homan) Busse in Cincinnati, OH and was named for her aunt, Elizabeth Homan Niehaus. Betty attended St Ursula Academy in Walnut Hills. She furthered her education at Edgecliff College where she earned her teaching degree. She was a teacher at The Nativity School in Pleasant Ridge and later at Clifton School. Miss Busse taught numerous Cincinnati children and always remembered their names when they sought her out at Music Hall decades later.
In 1971, Betty married Charles Schulenberg. They lived for a time in Lexington, KY before returning to Cincinnati, OH. During their marriage they traveled abroad and attended countless symphony concerts and operas. They did not have children.
Betty had a beautiful garden at her home in Silverton, loved to bake, enjoyed following the Cincinnati Reds, and attended the Cincinnati Opera and Cincinnati Symphony, returning even when living in Lexington. As a Cincinnati Symphony season subscriber for over 50 years, her recall of pieces she had heard in the past was nearly perfect. She was the keeper of the family history which was also Cincinnati history. Betty donated two family wedding gowns from the 1870s to the Cincinnati Art Museum in 2010 for the Wedded Perfection Exhibition, enabling thousands of people to view and learn from them.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband Charles, parents Joseph and Ida Busse, siblings Joseph Busse, Eugene Busse, and Jeannette (Busse) Toebbe, niece Sarah (Busse) Paterson, and nephews Richard Busse and Peter Busse. She is survived by nieces Judy (Busse) Shoop and Ann (Busse) Geeslin, great nieces and great nephews and other family and friends.
In loving memory of Betty, and in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St John the Evangelist Church, 7121 Plainfield Road, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45236 at 11am on Friday August 18, 2023, with burial following at Calvary Cemetery. No Visitation.
