Wanda Virginia Bennett passed away in her sleep in the early morning hours of January 1, 2009. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Martin L. Bennett. She is also survived by her two eldest children, Linda (Jeff) Martin and Stephan (Julie) Bennett. Preceding her in death were her youngest children, David on May 13, 1982 and Laurie on August 12, 2008. She lost her dearest friend Martha Hunt Callman several years ago. Wanda cherished her grandchildren Brittany and Nicole Bany, Caitlin and Darcy Martin, and Stephanie, Alexandra and Nicholas Bennett. Sister-in-law Janet Taylor and her daughters Pamela (Daniel) Farrish and Susan (Steven) Geresy and their children Kaeleigh Farrish, David and Mallory Geresy were beloved members of her extended family. A warm, kind and compassionate woman, Wanda was much loved by many friends some of whom she had known since childhood. A gifted artist and singer, Wanda chose to marry and raise her children rather than pursue these talents. A sense of humor helped her through those early family days with four rambunctious little ones. She and her husband enjoyed traveling. Britain, Ireland, Spain and Hawaii were among her favorite places to visit. Reading was her greatest pleasure in later years. The great love of her life was her husband, Martin with whom she shared a full and happy life. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 10. The family will greet friends from 1 to 1:30 p.m. prior to the service at Gilligan Funeral Home, 8225 Montgomery Road. Following immediately, the family will receive guests at the home of Jeff and Linda Martin. (Directions will be provided at Gilligan). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
