IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Thomas F.
Phalen, Jr.
June 27, 1938 – May 29, 2022
Thomas F. Phalen, Jr., who dedicated his many talents to creating a more just world and celebrating life's big and small moments with family and friends passed away on May 29, 2022, of Alzheimer's disease. Married to Mary Anne (Imwalle) Phalen for 58 years.
He is survived by their children, Thomas III, Tim (Nyioka), Helene Thiss (Mark), Brian (Julie), & Christina (Tom Chansky). Proud grandparent to Ben, Ashley & Maddie Thiss, Jonathan & James Phalen, Bree (Christopher) Kelly, Gabbey & Ella Phalen, Cora & David Phalen, and Hope & Luke Chansky. He will be celebrating the birth of his first great grandson from heaven this June.
He grew up in Waterbury, Connecticut, where he lived with parents Thomas F. Phalen, Sr. and Helen Farrell Phalen along with his sister Anne Marie Szumigala and briefly his cousin, Tom Myers (Lilia).
After graduation from College of the Holy Cross in 1961, the Air Force stationed him in Thailand where he climbed the ranks to become captain in charge of fueling operations. His service to his country continued as he had many civic contributions and a distinguished legal career. Tom was proud to represent labor unions and individuals with workplace discrimination or environmental injustice claims. He was a member of Hamilton County Democratic Party Central Committee, the University of Cincinnati Board of Trustees (1986-1995), the Committee on the Development of the Law Under the National Labor Relations Act, the Ohio State and Cincinnati bar association's labor and employment law sections, Pleasant Ridge Community Council, and Nativity Church Parish Council. He ended his career on the bench as Administrative Law Judge at the Department of Labor in 2010.
From pole-vaulting and truck driving to guitar playing, poetry writing and carpentry, his talents and energies were boundless. Wherever he went, in every stage of life, he used his creativity to imagine something better for especially those who were disenfranchised and went about improving things. But above all, he enjoyed his family and took delight in his wife Mary Anne and their life together.
Visitation will be at the Church of the Nativity of Our Lord in Pleasant Ridge on June 4, 2022 starting at 9:30 a.m. Mass at 10:30 and burial to follow at Gate of Heaven approximately noon.
