Thomas J. McClorey was born on March 10, 1926 to Howard and Catherine Mahoney McClorey. His education included Blessed Sacrament Grade School '40, Saint Xavier High School '44 and was a February 1950 graduate of Purdue University with a BS degree in Civil Engineering. He immediately went to work for his father, Howard McClorey, a self-educated architect who started his own practice in 1913. Tom McClorey's hands on experience for the next four years along with prior studies of Architecture at the University of Virginia and University of Cincinnati allowed him to pursue registration as an architect by sitting for the State of Ohio exam and receiving a passing grade on the first attempt. Tom joined his father in a partnership as Howard and Thomas J. McClorey, Architects in 1954 focusing on schools, hospitals and post offices. Following Howard's death in 1965 the practice continued as McClorey and Savage, Architects. Tom, his late brother, Jim McClorey and Dick Savage also built and operated the second self-storage facility in the greater Cincinnati area. They were responsible for developing the North East quadrant of I-275 and Route 125 in Clermont County and, as partners, designed and operated two mobile home parks in Northern Kentucky. Other joint business interests included farming, cattle breeding and oil drilling. Relying upon his engineering and architectural knowledge, Mr. McClorey was often called upon by the legal profession as an expert witness. Tom met Grace Hake (daughter of the Elmer and Elizabeth Funch Hake) at a mutual friends wedding in January of 1953 and he and his son John (then twenty months old) successfully courted and married Grace Hake on June 16, 1953. The family of three grew to a family of six. And years later with marriages of their children John, Karen, Mike and Jeff came the addition of nine grandchildren: John and Meg LeBlond McClorey's Christopher and Meriwether; Karen McClorey Hackett and Donald's Grace, Kelly and Donny; Mike and Kit Dupree McClorey's Max and Annie, and Jeff and Tracy Steger McClorey's Dillan and Natalie. In addition to the immediate family members listed above Thomas J. McClorey is survived by his sister Kathleen McClorey Holthaus, Jeanette Smith McClorey, Frank Garry, Elmer and Jeanne Hake Obermeyer and Edward and Carol Cordes Hake plus many nieces, nephews and friends. For sentimental reasons let the following be recorded: Tom had two brothers, Jack who was killed on January 17, 1945 at Herrisheim, France while serving in the United States Army as an infantryman in World War II and Jim who died February 22, 1994. Their sister Eileen McClorey Garry died on May 8, 2004. Tom was also the loving brother-in-law of the late Janet Glassmeyer Hake and Charles Hake, who passed away December 3, 1998 and February 11, 2004 respectively. In 1954 the McCloreys became members of Saint Gertrude Church in Madeira. Besides being a CCD teacher at high school level Tom was also recognized as an expert on the brat and hot dog grill at the Church's summer festivals. In February 1982 for one reason or another the McCloreys attended service at Saint Anthony Church in Madisonville. The size of the church brought back fond memories of the original Saint Gertrude Church and they accepted an invitation to become members. Over the years, Tom served on the Grounds and Building Committee, received an award for his contribution to the Church's renovation in 1992 and was a scheduled Lector at designated 8:30 Sunday morning Masses throughout the year. During the past months Tom continued his weekly visits to his "retirement desk" at the McClorey & Savage Architects Office and lunches with Dick and Robin Savage. Tom was also an active member of the Monday Golfers and looked forward to playing the game and to the fellowship. Tom loved Saturdays and the people he dealt with regularly at Eastern Hills Cleaners in Madison Place, the Madeira Meat Market, JK Chili, Post Office and Kroger's. He will be missed by many but always remembered as a loving, caring husband, father, grandfather, brother, brother-in-law, business partner, golfer and friend. The Memorial Mass will be held at ten o'clock Friday morning, November 23rd at St. Anthony Church, 6104 Desmond Street in Madisonville. If desired, memorial donations can be made to the St. Anthony Bread Fund, 6104 Desmond Street, Cincinnati, Ohio 45227.
