Obituary

Theodore "Ted" William Leugers passed away on February 3, 2025, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Trisha Shannon Leugers, and their children: Brian, Sean (Kathryn), George (Sara), Shannon (Brian) Davison, and Kelly. He is also survived by his brother, Jerry (Patty) Leugers, and sister-in-law, Pam Leugers.

Ted was a proud grandfather to eight grandchildren: Monica and Mary Leugers; Kendall, Brandon, and Eva Leugers; Charlotte, Avery, and Caroline Davison. He was also a cherished uncle, cousin, great-uncle, and brother-in-law to many in the Leugers and Shannon families.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Rebecca June (nee Enneking) Leugers, his sister Ann Leugers Cerone, and his brother George Leugers.

A graduate of St. Xavier High School and Xavier University, Ted was commissioned as an Air Defense Artillery officer through Army ROTC at Xavier. His father also graduated from Xavier and commissioned from Xavier Army ROTC. Ted served as an Army officer working with the Nike Hercules missile system, primarily in Malibu, CA. After his military service, he became President of Leugers Fine Furniture before later transitioning to a career in commercial fire and security sales.

Ted had a deep love for sports, especially Xavier basketball, Bengals football, and his sons' football games at Moeller High School and Denison University. Though a St. X graduate, he proudly supported Moeller, ensuring he was always on the winning side of rivalry football games!

His strong Catholic faith guided his life, and he was a dedicated leader in his community. Ted was an active member of the Men's Catholic Fellowship at St. Gertrude and All Saints, and an extraordinary Eucharistic minister. He had a deep knowledge of the Catholic faith and a passion for serving, proudly guiding others as an RCIA sponsor three times.

He also gave his time generously, serving as Chairman of the All Saints Festival twice, The Moeller Main Event, and Moeller football's post-game gatherings for seven years. Additionally, he contributed to his community through years of service with Sycamore Township.

Trisha, the love of his life, and family were at the heart of everything for Ted. He loved gathering everyone for holidays, birthdays, Sunday dinners, and Friday pizza nights where he made legendary pizzas from scratch. Every Thanksgiving, he took charge of cooking the turkey and preparing his signature stuffing. He was known for his dad jokes, playing games with his grandchildren, and soothing even the crankiest little ones.

Michigan held a special place in Ted's heart. He spent summer vacations at the family cottage on Lake Leelanau, a tradition passed down through generations. He loved boating, tubing, and water skiing with his children and grandchildren. Summer vacations in Michigan also included lots of homemade pies, trips to the sand dunes, Leland, and Suttons Bay. He enjoyed ending the day by the firepit making s'mores with his family while taking in his favorite view—his boat in the water and looking across the lake toward Fountain Point.

Ted's adventurous spirit and passion for learning were evident throughout his life. As a young man, he spent Saturday mornings sailing with his father and siblings on a Lightning at Lake Cowen. Ted learned to shoot at the Indian Hill Shooting Club—skills that likely contributed to his "expert" qualification on the M16 during his time in the Army. Growing up, he and his brothers were always building something, whether it was rebuilding engines for cars and motorcycles or constructing a go-kart. They even built powered model gliders, enthusiastically chasing them through the neighborhoods. Ted also had a love for flying and earned his private pilot's license. When he and Trisha were dating, he enjoyed taking her on local flights out of Lunken, and early in their marriage, he flew her and family members to places such as St. Louis, Tampa, and Traverse City. He had a lifelong passion for cars and motorcycles, with his red Sunbeam Alpine being a personal favorite. Always eager to try something new, he even gave scuba diving a shot.

As an adult, Ted's skills extended to woodworking and metalworking, and he was always immersed in a new project—whether restoring his boat, fixing someone's car, reading military history, or staying up to date on current events.  Patient and kind, he was the person everyone turned to for life advice, mechanical know-how, or simply a helping hand. In recent years, he took up industrial sewing, re-upholstering two sofas, refurbishing his boat's interior seats, and even making a custom boat cover. When his granddaughter showed interest, he taught himself how to make purses with his sewing machine for the girls.

Ted fought with unwavering determination and never gave up. On the very day he passed, he had planned to stand and walk with the help of Physical Therapy—his personal goal on the path to returning home. In the end, Ted achieved that goal in a greater way than imagined, standing and walking with the Lord to his eternal home. His family will forever be grateful for the love he poured into everything he did—for the Lord, his wife, his family, his community, and the world.

We are forever grateful to our friends, family, Ted's care teams, and the community for their unwavering support throughout his illness. The prayers, prayer circles, understanding, kind words, meals, and acts of kindness meant more than words can express. We will always remember and cherish the love shared and the generosity shown. A special thank you to those who brought Ted communion daily, a gift that meant so much to him—especially Sharon and Kent Linnemann, whose steadfast devotion never wavered, no matter the weather or location.

Visitation will be held at 8:30 a.m. on February 14, 2025, at St. Gertrude Church in Madeira, in the Parish Center (next to the church), followed by a Catholic Mass at 9:30 a.m. in the church.
