Sr. Ann Hunt, S.C.

Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Ann Hunt died Aug. 7, 2026, at the age of 84 in Mother Margaret Hall on the Mount St. Joseph campus. She was a Sister of Charity for 65 years.

Sister Ann was born Sondra Lee Hunt on March 19, 1942, to Herman K. and Edna M. (Auer) Hunt in Cincinnati, Ohio. She was the oldest of three children, with one sister and one brother.

Sister Ann grew up in Cincinnati, attending St. Dominic School and graduating from Seton High School in 1960. Two of her mother’s sisters, Sister Mary Stephen Auer and Sister Loretta Marie Auer, were Sisters of Charity. Through her Sisters of Charity teachers at St. Dominic and Seton, as well as the example of her aunts, whom she saw as happy and contributing family members, Sister Ann felt God was calling her to vowed life. With the blessing of her parents, she entered the Community on Sept. 8, 1960. At the time of her vows, she received the name Sister Ann Kenneth.

Sister Ann earned the Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the College of Mount St. Joseph in 1964 and a master’s degree in religious studies from St. Louis University in Missouri in 1978.

Sister Ann’s more than 50 years of active ministry reflected her deep commitment to education, pastoral ministry and walking alongside others. She served as a high school teacher, religious and adult educator, pastoral minister and youth minister in communities throughout the dioceses of Cincinnati and Toledo. Wherever she served, Sister Ann valued relationships and the opportunity to accompany others as they grew in faith and navigated the joys and challenges of life.

Her ministry in education began in 1964, when she taught English at Catholic Central High School in Springfield, Ohio. She remained there until 1969, when she moved to Carroll High School in Dayton, Ohio, teaching religion and several levels of high school English until 1976. While pursuing her master’s degree in religious studies, Sister Ann continued to expand her ministry, serving as youth ministry coordinator at Bergamo Retreat Center in Centerville, Ohio, until 1980. She then spent five years in parish ministry at St. Michael in Findlay in the Diocese of Toledo.

In 1985, Sister Ann returned to the Cincinnati Archdiocese, beginning nine years of service as director of religious education for the St. Leonard community in Centerville. There she experienced strong community presence. “I felt valued and honored that I was on the inside of another’s life,” she once said.

After her years at St. Leonard, Sister Ann took a year for personal renewal before beginning a new chapter of ministry as pastoral associate at St. Mary Parish in Oxford, Ohio. The role brought together many of the gifts she had developed throughout her years of service. She worked closely with college-age students and parishioners while coordinating the scheduling and training of worship and Eucharistic ministers, lectors, servers, cantors and musicians. She also accompanied volunteers in bereavement ministry and outreach to elderly and homebound parishioners, as well as those participating in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA).

She shared at the time, “It’s a moving experience to meet people, elicit their gifts and be touched by their faith. I meet such down-to-earth, faith-filled women and men, from young adult Miami University students to octogenarians.”

In 1997, Sister Ann began serving as a teacher and administrative assistant in adult education at the Terrace Guild in Winton Terrace, a program of Cincinnati Union Bethel founded by Sister of Charity of Cincinnati Julia Mary Deiters. The program was offered in two Cincinnati neighborhoods, with the primary goal of preparing people to pass the GED test. It also provided case management services to help minimize barriers to job and life success.

Reflecting on her experience, Sister Ann shared, “It helped me to appreciate the frustration of some and the real determination of others to pass that important test that would open doors to new opportunities. I was also given rich opportunities to interact and learn from different cultures.”

In 1999, Sister Ann joined The Women’s Connection, where she had previously volunteered. As program coordinator, she quickly learned that each day brought something new. At the time she remarked, “I enjoy the people with whom I work, meeting new volunteers and observing the excitement of the women who discover that they can do more than they thought. I see firsthand the value of women making connections with other women, seeing self-worth and confidence grow with each coming together.”

In 2012, Sister Ann began reducing her full-time ministry activities but continued volunteering at St. Francis-St. George parish, where she was also a devoted member of the choir. Words and melodies moved her.

When her health made it necessary to retire, Sister Ann found joy in her many creative gifts, including writing, drawing, poetry, watercolor, journaling and jigsaw puzzles. She was especially proud of having inherited her dad’s violin, which she learned to play while in high school. It would always put her in a reflective mood, as did frequent walks in nature.

Sister Ann moved to Mother Margaret Hall in 2016, where she was able to share her creativity and encouragement. She participated in art activities on many levels. She encouraged Sisters and staff members to discover their ‘new gifts’ in the arts and music. Sister Ann considered herself a “forever learner.”

Sister Ann is survived by her sister, Margo Seifert, and brother, Kenneth Hunt, as well as nieces and nephews.

Sisters, family and friends will greet visitors in the back of the Motherhouse Chapel from 9-10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20, 2026, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in the Motherhouse Chapel. Sister’s burial will follow in the Sisters of Charity cemetery.
