Obituary

Russell Lawrence McCarron, PhD, of Millersburg, OH is survived by his beloved wife Betsy and his loving son Russell McCarron, Jr. He was born July 24, 1938 in Chestnut Hills, Philadelphia, PA. He died at Pomerene Hospital, Millersburg, OH on February 10, 2010 after a courageous battle against a long illness. Russell helped to make the world a better place, and will be missed by his family and friends who loved him. Growing up on the Main Line of Pennsylvania, Russell became an Eagle Scout in Paoli Troup 1, Boy Scouts of America. On May 6, 1959, he became a member of Tau Beta Pi, and graduated with distinction from Penn State University in Metallurgy on the eleventh day of June, 1960. While at College, he enjoyed being a brother in the Sigma Nu Fraternity, and loved playing the trombone in the Blue Band. He received his Master of Science in Metallurgical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, where he also earned his Doctor of Philosophy. Russell was a reserve commissioned officer, grade of second lieutenant, in the Army of the United States. He had a distinguished career as a senior research scientist for the General Electric Company, where he was honored to become an Elfun. He worked in the energy field, trying to improve the life of materials in different applications, especially gas turbines, coal difference and liquid fuel; trying to answer the question of how to make these systems more efficient, focusing on energy and corrosion. Russell was a train hobbyist and a member of the Train Collectors Association; and an avid sailor on Lake George, NY. The highlight of Russell's life was being best man in Russell Jr.'s (Claudia Rios) wedding on October 3, 2009. Russell Sr. loved and respected his new daughter-in-law. He is also survived by his cherished brothers; Dr. David McCarron of Portland, OR, and Jack McCarron, Esquire, of Ocean City, NY, and their wives. He was a dear uncle to his brothers' children, and had many cousins whom he loved.
