Obituary

Richard Lowell Bullard was born November 3, 1934 in Wheeling, West Virginia to Vada Catherine (Bixler) and Reuben George Bullard on his father's 39th birthday. He was welcomed to the family by his 6-year-old brother, Reuben George Bullard Jr. After his father passed away when he was only 8 years old, the family moved to Mitchell, Indiana to be closer to his mother's family. He had many fond memories of growing up in Mitchell and enjoyed returning to visit family there when he could. Richard left Indiana to attend the Cincinnati Bible Seminary, where he majored in Theology. During those same years, he studied Chemistry at Ohio Mechanics Institute and Psychology at the University of Cincinnati. Shortly after leaving college, he was drafted and served with the United States Army. Richard worked as a Control Chemist for the Andrew Jergens Company for over 25 years, retiring from there in 1981. Following his retirement from Jergens, Richard pursued laboratory work in several fields before concluding his career as a contractor for the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH). He retired for good in 2005, at the age of 70 years old. Richard was passionate about photography. Rarely would a day pass without his mentioning some Nikon or Leica camera he had once owned. His children can still remember how he, in pursuit of the perfect shot, would ask them to hold a pose for what they believed was an inordinately long time. Richard was also a history buff, with a particular interest in the World War II era. Because of this, it was not uncommon to hear him flippantly ask, "Wie geht es ihnen?" when greeting friends or "Jawohl, mein Kommandant!" in response to being asked to do something that he wasn't keen on doing. His greatest source of joy has always been family. He spent the last 37 years of his life as the beloved husband of Jacqueline Bullard (nee Rose), and devoted father to Theresa (Tony) Cappel, Cindy Peterson, Daniel (Adrienne) Bullard, and Richie (Elizabeth) Bullard. He was also the loving grandfather of Eric, Emily, Michelle, Sarah, and Josh Cappel, Aaron Heid, Julia and Weston Bullard, and Zoey Bullard. Richard also enjoyed spending time with his brother Reuben's (Lynn) family, and was very close to Reuben's children: Rick, Howard, Cathy, and Suzanne; sometimes being affectionately referred to as a "second father" by them. Richard will be forever loved and greatly missed for his dry sense of humor, sharp wit, and his deep-seated loyalty to his family and friends. Visitation will be held on Saturday, June 24, 2017 at the Gilligan Funeral Home, 3671 Warsaw Ave. from 8:30 - 9:45 AM. Funeral Mass immediately following at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, 3680 Warsaw Ave. Cremation will follow at a later date.
