Obituary

Rebecca S. Parker, 89, passed away Thursday, May 27, 2010. Rebecca (Becky/Reba) was born on February 7, 1921 in North Little Rock, Arkansas. While attending Little Rock Jr. College, she was President of Phi Theta Kappa, an honorary scholastic society, Secretary of the Theater Guild, and active in the Glee Club and many campus organizations. She won awards for her piano playing and her extraordinary typing skills. After graduation in 1940, she attended one year of business school, and then eloped with Jasper E. Stuart, with whom she had six children. When her marriage with Jasper ended in divorce, Becky quickly landed on her feet supporting her children and working two jobs. Her strong work ethic enabled her to return to a secure single life with her children. She continued Jasper's insurance business, becoming the first woman agent in Cincinnati for Aetna, and secured a position managing a new apartment complex in Southgate, Ky. Other positions during her working career included elementary school teacher and administrative positions with the Census Bureau, Price Waterhouse and various other companies. After retirement at age 62, she remained active in her community with church involvement, social activities and volunteerism, notably Ft. Thomas Women's Club and St Luke (now St. Elizabeth) Hospital. As Becky once said, "If I think I can help just one person through my volunteer efforts, then I am happy. Volunteering gives me that gratification." Becky married Paul B. Parker in 1975. Together they enjoyed dancing, traveling and socializing with their friends, family and work associates. Paul died unexpectedly in 1993. After adjusting to widowhood, Becky once again returned to a life of spontaneity and gaiety. Becky was immensely proud of her children, all well educated, established and successful. In her later years she had a loving and inclusive relationship with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her days were filled with reading, completing crossword puzzles, church involvement, performing arts and drama, music, cats, travel and her well-deserved alone time. Survivors: Her children, Anne Charles, Rebecca Shapiro (Mel), Mary Stuart, Don Stuart (Laura), Larry Stuart, John Stuart (Maureen) and her two cats, Codi and Zoey. Her grandchildren, Phil Charles, George Charles (Wendy), Liz Chren (Bill), Becky Cook (Steve), Karen Krammes (Larry), David Charles (Heather), Amy Mullins (Mike), Kristin Stock (Don) and Megan Stuart, and her 21 great grandchildren. Memorial Service: Saturday, June 5 at St. John's United Church of Christ. Visitation begins at 10 AM with a memorial service following at 11 AM. Memorials: Contributions may be made to St. John's United Church of Christ, 415 Park Ave., Newport, KY 41071.
