Dr. Raul D. Alfaro
September 7, 1924 – January 18, 2022
Dr. Raul "Dan" Alfaro, 97, passed peacefully on January 18, 2022, with family by his side. A native of Tarma, Peru, he was born on September 7, 1924, to his parents, the late Daniel Alfaro Calle and the late Emma Alvarez de Alfaro. Raul was blessed to have four siblings: the late Luis "Chalaco" Alfaro Alvarez, the late Luz "Lucy" Alfaro, the late Maruja Alfaro, and Humberto "Bert" Alfaro Alvarez, currently living in Alberta, Canada.
Dr. Alfaro graduated from Universidad Nacional Mayor De San Marcos with his degree in medicine in Lima, Peru, in 1950. He then traveled to the United States and served as a Research Fellow in Medicine at Albany Medical College, specializing in Endocrinology. Dr. Alfaro completed his Internship at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton, Ohio in 1957, followed by completing his Residency in Internal Medicine at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati in 1960. In 1961, the Educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates awarded him the standard certificate to practice medicine as a doctor in the United States.
Dr. Alfaro started a private practice where he treated his patients with loving care for over 50 years before joining Mercy Health Physicians in Mariemont, Ohio. Being a humble man, Dr. Raul D. Alfaro rarely talked about his awards and accolades. He was recognized as a member of the Industrial Medical Association, the American Medical Association, the Ohio State Medical Association, the American Medical Association, and many others. Even in his retirement, his desire to help others expanded beyond the medical field.
In addition to his career, Raul "Dan" Alfaro was an active volunteer in his community. He served as a honorary consul of Peru in the United States, did complimentary well-checks at various locations around Cincinnati, became a docent at the Cincinnati Art Museum, and served meals to the homeless and others in need at the Cincinnati Food Pantry in Over-the-Rhine.
Dan settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1957, and started his family with his wife, the late Judith Meris Alfaro (nee McDaniels). Together, they bore five children who were the center of his life. Sadly, two of his sons pre-deceased him: Ramiro "Ray" Alfaro and Miguel "Mike" Alfaro (Marialuisa "Marilu" Alfaro). His three surviving children, their spouses and families were blessed to be with him until his death: Daniel "Danny" Alfaro (Maria Pia Alfaro), Maria Alfaro Fuller (Don Fuller), and David "Dave" Alfaro (Charlene Rom-Alfaro).
After the passing of his first wife, Dan was able to find love again with his treasured friend and companion, the now late Mrs. Barbara "Barb" Alfaro. With her came additional family whom he dearly loved.
His legacy continued with nine grandchildren: Mariateresa Alfaro, Alejandro "Alex" Alfaro, Christina Alfaro, Elliot Fuller, Christopher "Chris" Alfaro, Andrea Alfaro, Joshua "Josh" Alfaro (Alexa Alfaro), Rebecca Alfaro, and Olivia Alfaro. They all loved their Grandpa as much as he loved them!
Dan's family continues to grow, including four great-grandchildren: Layton Reynolds, Melody Alfaro, Emma Evans, and Finnley Alfaro. In addition to his naturally born children, Dan happily received several extended family members, including nieces, nephews, step-children and grandchildren, and many others, whom he welcomed as his own.
Sharing life with Dr. Raul "Dan" Alfaro was truly a blessing for all! He will be greatly missed and forever loved!
