Peter Swenty, ardent Democrat Mount Adams lawyer led campaigns for 50 years By Howard Wilkinson Enquirer staff writer Politicians come and go but, in the world of Cincinnati Democratic politics, the one constant presence for the past half-century was Peter W. Swenty. The 72-year-old lawyer, whose passion for partisan politics resulted in numerous appointments to city boards and commissions over the past five decades, died Tuesday at his Mount Adams home. 'Nobody could begin to count the number of Democratic campaigns Pete worked on,' said Hamilton County Democratic Chairman Tim Burke. 'He was tireless, and a Democrat through and through.' Mr. Swenty served as Democratic ward chairman in Mount Adams, managing the campaigns of a host of Democratic candidates and serving as right-hand man to former Democratic Chairman John 'Socko' Wiethe, who led the party from the 1950s into the 1980s. He was a graduate of Walnut Hills High School and earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy at the University of Cincinnati before going on to earn his law degree at the UC law school. Mr. Swenty served on boards and commissions including the Cincinnati Planning Commission, and was a former president of the Southwest Ohio Regional Transportation Authority Board. In addition to his wife, Dorothy, Mr. Swenty is survived by two sons, Peter of Fairview, and Mark of San Francisco; two daughters, Kristina of Madison Place and Suzanne Brightwell of Anderson Township. A third son, Eric, preceded him in death. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Gilligan Funeral Home, 2926 Woodburn Ave., Walnut Hills. His funeral will be 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
