Obituary

Mary Sauer Sloneker peacefully passed away on Wednesday, May 31 at her home in Cincinnati. She lived a long rich life spanning 97 wonderful years. One of her favorite sayings was "smile and the whole world smiles with you, frown and you frown, alone". Her disposition was consistently happy and her outlook positive.

Her beloved husband, John with whom she shared a fantastic marriage of 56 years, preceded Mary. The many happy memories they created were treasured after his passing 20-years ago. Her eldest son, John and her second husband, Walter Donahue, also preceded her.

She thrived in the company of her family across many decades. Her mother, Sadie, father, George and brother, Beach were frequent companions. Her children, Mary Ida, Bill and John cherished her company and respected her guidance and advice. So too she formed loving relationships with Mary Ida's husband, Marshal Compton and Bill's wife Joanne. She adored her grandchildren John, Will, Laura, Andrea and Carl. With the arrival of John and Chelsea's daughter, Lola in 2020 Mary joined the ranks of great-grandmothers.

Mary was welcoming, friendly and warmly engaging. She lit up the room and made everyone feel welcome and special. Gregarious by instinct, she enjoyed many social events and was the hostess of many. Her love of entertaining enabled her to display her talents and interest in flowers, décor and especially good food. No surprise that cooking was one of her passions, noodle soufflé being one of her more memorable and delicious dishes.

Mary excelled at bridge, bringing home many awards over the years. Her skill and good sportsmanship kept her in high demand as a partner at events spanning the country from Lake Tahoe, CA to Nantucket, MA and with her many friends in Cincinnati, Watch Hill and Palm Beach. She enjoyed many games with her children and grandchildren.

Born in 1926 in Hamilton, Ohio Mary raised her family there before relocating with John to Cincinnati in 1979. She loved the city and supported its many outstanding institutions, including the Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati Zoo and Cincinnati Parks. She was an ardent supporter of charities aiding battered women.

She will be missed by the family and many friends who loved her dearly. The service to celebrate her life will be held at the Indian Hill church on Thursday, June 15 at 11 o'clock.
