Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Mooney (Welch) (Late William M.) was born in New Orleans to John B. Welch and Frances (O'Callaghan) Welch on January 19, 1926. Betty was an animal lover who saved many strays. One time, while living in Noblesville, IN. a community just north of Indianapolis, she found out about the particularly cruel practices at the local Dog Pound. She went there and that night brought home every dog and cat (about 5 dogs and 15 cats). Over the next few weeks she found homes for every single pet, nursing some through sickness, and then proceeded to see to it that the manager of the pound was replaced. She was born into two very old Boston Irish families that date back to the earliest days of this country. Betty and her family were very proud of there ancestry, having among their ancestors Bishop John Carroll, the first ever Arch Bishop in America, and Charles Carroll of Carrolton, a signer of The Declaration of Independence. Mary was preceded in death by her beloved husband William M. Mooney in 1997. She is survived by her three children, William M. Mooney of Boca Raton, FL, Joanne Sloneker (William) of Indian Hill, and James C. Mooney (Heather) of Anderson, along with five grandchildren and a sister; JoAnn McLane of Indianapolis Services will be held at St. Gertrude's Church in Madeira Wednesday (28th) at 10:00 AM. Reception afterwards. Burial will be later that day at the Mooney family plot in Edinburgh, IN.
