In Loving Memory of Mary Monahan Gimpel January 11, 1943 – March 22, 2025

Mary Monahan Gimpel, a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother, cherished friend, and dedicated community leader, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2025. She leaves behind a legacy of generosity, and a deep commitment to the betterment of her community.

Born on January 11, 1943, Mary was a proud graduate of St. Ursula Academy and Edgecliff College. She carried the values of her education into every aspect of her life, channeling her passion and energy into making a lasting impact on the city she loved.

Mary was an avid philanthropic volunteer, holding major roles over the years with numerous Cincinnati organizations, including The Ohio Citizens for the Arts, The Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, Caracole, The Convalescent Hospital for Children, Children's Hospital Medical Center, Kindervelt, and Xavier University. She took great pride in chairing impactful fundraisers, such as the Cincinnati Antiques Festival and the Mason Dixon Steeple Chase, benefiting Children's Hospital Medical Center and St. Elizabeth Hospital Medical Center and the Cincinnati May Festival. Her leadership and involvement extended to organizations such as The Cincinnati Women's Club, Visions Community Services, Learning Through the Arts, Playhouse in the Park, the Cincinnati Art Museum, and the Taft Museum.

Beyond her hands-on involvement, Mary also served on multiple boards, including the Babies Milk Fund, Mental Health Services East, and Music Hall Restoration. Her dedication to civic engagement was recognized with the prestigious Cincinnati Enquirer Women of the Year Award and the Venue Magazine Civic Leadership Award—testaments to her unwavering commitment to making a difference.

While her philanthropic efforts were extraordinary, Mary's greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her devoted husband, Jon "Jack" Gimpel, her beloved children, John Gimpel (Paige) and Cait Ryan (Todd), and her four grandchildren, Elizabeth Gimpel, Ben Gimpel, Madeleine Ryan and Charles Ryan; as well as her sister Paula Monahan Brock (Steve) and her children Leigh Fields (Brock) and Alex Brock. She loved nothing more than spending time with her family and friends, whether traveling, antiquing, reading, or enjoying a good movie. Hilton Head, SC, held a special place in her heart, where she found peace and joy in its beauty.

Mary's warmth, generosity, and passion for life will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Her legacy of kindness and service will continue to inspire all who knew her.

A Viewing will be held at Gilligan Funeral Home at 8225 Montgomery Road from 4:00pm to 6:00pm on Friday, April 4th.  A private family burial will take place on Saturday morning, followed by a Celebration of Mary's remarkable life on Saturday, April 5th from 12:30pm to 3:00pm at Cincinnati Country Club (SAB) which is open to all friends and family.
