Obituary

Mary S. Ghory (nee Sause), 87, left us on November 7, 2006. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Joseph E. Ghory, in 1988. Missing her deeply are her children: Dr. Mary Jo Ghory, Tucson, Arizona; Dr. Ward Ghory, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Dr. Ann Ghory, Cincinnati, Ohio; Dr. Patty Ghory, Cincinnati, Ohio; and Attorney Amy Winnick, Hamden, Connecticut; as well as her 13 grandchildren. Mary was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and grew up in southern Indiana. She was the first in her family to attend a four-year college, graduating from Indiana University in Business. She worked as an executive assistant at Procter & Gamble after college until she married in 1947. Joe and Mary built and lived for over 50 years in one of Carl Strauss's first houses. Together they inspired all of their children to complete graduate education and enter professional careers. They traveled extensively and built a wonderful collection of modern art. Mary was a dedicated homemaker, an excellent cook and an avid gardener. She actively participated in numerous community volunteer activities, supporting the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, the Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park, the Garden Club, the Hillside Trust, Women Helping Women, St Francis de Sales Church, the Women's Club and many other groups. As President of the Auxiliary to the Academy of Medicine she supported the opening of Apple Tree, a childcare center for women working in the hospital, and served as its Treasurer. She also served as President of the Women's Committee of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra and President of the Summit Country Day School PTA. She was a dutiful poll watcher for the Democratic Party, even into her 80's. Her passion to travel took her all over the world: China, India, Japan, Russia, Turkey, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Romania, Morocco, Mexico, Brazil, New Zealand, Canada, Alaska, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean and throughout Europe. Mary was a tireless trailblazer for women in Cincinnati. We will all miss her energy and spirit. Visitation Saturday, November 11 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, 1600 Madison Rd. from 9 AM until Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM. Memorials may be made to the Joseph E. Ghory Allergy Fund, Greater Cincinnati Foundation, P.O. Box 5200, Cincinnati Ohio 45201.
