Marjorie Dyer Reitz went to be with her Heavenly Father and join her husband of 50 years on June 16th, 2013 at the age of 100 years and seven months. She was born on Nov. 20, 1912 in Springfield, Ohio, to parents Augusta Ehrle Dyer and Albert William Dyer. She had an older sister, Dorothy Dyer Dexter (Henry) and a younger brother, John Fredrick Dyer (Jane), both who preceded her in death. Although living her first three years in Springfield, she spent about 7 years in Mayville, NY where her father was Editor/Publisher of the weekly Mayville Sentinel newspaper. When in the 4th grade her family returned to Ohio, her father purchased and began publishing the weekly South Charleston Sentinel. Marjorie was married to Harry Albert Reitz, who preceded her in death in 1989. She was the loving mother of Victoria Anne (Vicki) Reitz Alpaugh (Peter) of Cincinnati, grandmother of Abigail Dyer Alpaugh Knowles (Drew) of Boulder, CO, and Amelia Northcott Alpaugh of NYC. In 2010 she was delighted to become the great-grandmother of Dyer Adele Knowles. She also leaves behind one niece and three nephews. As President of her Class, Marjorie graduated in 1930 from South Charleston High School, and went on to attend the Miami-Jacob Business College in Dayton. While working part-time in the Dayton YMCA cafeteria, she met her future husband. Marjorie was always involved with music, having taken piano, cello, organ and voice lessons beginning in childhood. While at college she was accepted into the Westminster Presbyterian Church choir, and later became the soprano soloist at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Dayton where her sister was organist. After graduating in 1932, Marjorie was employed in the stenographic pool of Dayton Power & Light for five years, and in 1937 after completing the Civil Service exam, got a position with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Dept. of Soil Conservation. In the early 1940's she was transferred to the U.S. War Department Signal Corps., and later she became parish secretary for St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. Marjorie and Harry were married on December 31, 1938 at St. Andrew's Church, and lived in North Dayton before moving to Kettering, Ohio in the 1940's. When they joined St. George's Episcopal Church in the 1950's, she became the main soprano soloist in the choir. In 1959, Marjorie was accepted into the Dayton Music Appreciation Choral Club, in which she enjoyed active membership until 1996 at age 84. Her last formal church experience was singing in the choir at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Oakwood, Ohio, where the family became members in 1967. After her husband's death, Marjorie moved to One Lincoln Park in Kettering where she lived independently and contentedly for 20 years, but spending her final days at The Kenwood skilled-nursing area in Cincinnati. Throughout her adult life, Marjorie played a superb game of bridge, even into her 90's. She was a talented seamstress- sewing lovely clothes for herself, Vicki and her various dolls. She knit sweaters, coats and gloves for family and donations, was a creative gardener, volunteered at the Dayton State Hospital reading the news of the day, with her husband held offices at the Kettering Senior Citizens, and later held many for the Resident's Committee at One Lincoln Park. In her 50's she modeled for the French Door of Dayton for fashion shows in the area. A Visitation Luncheon will be celebrated on Friday, June 21 from 12 PM until the Memorial Service at 1 PM at St. Paul Episcopal Church, 33 West Dixon Ave., Dayton, OH 45419.
