IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Louis G.
Pohl
October 2, 1921 – June 6, 2023
Louis George Pohl "Bud", born October 2, 1921, passed away peacefully at home on June 6, 2023, at the age of 101. He was predeceased by his wife of 73 years (Vivian). He is survived by his four children: Robert (Anne) Pohl, Carolyn (Bill) Mackey, James (Mary) Pohl, Judith (Andy) Frey, 8 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren.
He was a grandson to Louis Hudepohl (1842-1902) and Mary Elizabeth Weyer (1847-1923). His parents William A. Pohl (1876-1952) and Carolyn M. "Cora" Hudepohl (1881-1966).
His love of Cincinnati was evident in his family's heritage of the Hudepohl Brewing Company in which he served in an advisory role as President. He was a Real Estate Agent for most of his working career.
He was born literally in a house on Wold Avenue in East Walnut Hills, Cincinnati, Ohio. He was a lifelong member of St. Francis de Sales Church. He attended St. Francis de Sales Grade School, Purcell High School, and The University of Dayton. His love of those schools was shown through almost nightly renditions of the School Spirit or Fight songs while having a sip of his favorite beverage.
His childhood was a time when street cars and trains were commonplace, cars were cool, and sailing a 17 square meter sailboat (#2) in wool pants and a heavy shirt was awesome. He would recall riding in some of the earlier boats which had a 1 horsepower "putt-putt" engine which would explode from time to time.
He developed severe allergies as a young child and the family physician told his parents to head North during the summers for a solution to his allergies. His parents settled on Walloon Lake, Michigan as the parcel of land they found met the requirements of a Catholic Church nearby, Hospital nearby, and lake front which receives plenty of fresh air from Lake Michigan. His parents built a log home on the South Shore of Walloon Lake in 1928. The family would spend the summer at the Thomas House on South Shore while the cabin was being built. This would become his summer passion for the rest of his life. His parents sold a boat to Lou Richter on Crooked Lake in Northern Michigan. He delivered the propellor to the door, and when a blonde named Vivian answered, a date was set for Wimpy's Hamburger Joint in Petoskey and the rest is history. They would eventually marry in 1947, a love that lasted for 73 years.
Raising a family in the Cincinnati neighborhoods of Mt. Lookout and Hyde Park, made joining Hyde Park Country Club a perfect fit for his family in the fifties. He was an avid golfer and loved playing Inter Club matches with golf pro Bob Wilmers. His glassware cabinet has many HPCC logo glassware, including the Braemar Tournament. Bud and Vivian loved playing bridge with their friends at the club. He enjoyed many lunches and dinners looking over the beautiful tree lined course.
Owning a log home makes one crafty. He loved woodworking, building model Chris-Crafts, Hacker-Crafts, and replicas of river boats he remembered taking to Coney Island in Cincinnati. His woodworking eventually gave way to "taking care of the logs" on the cottage. His best artwork could be defined as the modern lamp style, made from a damaged steel boat propeller, which would be given to the person who damaged the propellor. He always asked us if we hit "hard water".
His father William A Pohl, purchased 1 share of Walloon Lake Country Club on August 21, 1928, the original stock certificate number 250 (replacing number 108) is still in the family's possession. As a young kid, he paid 5 bucks to have playing rights for the summer as documented within the ledgers of the club with his signature. He remembered the original 18-hole course layout on the lake. He loved joking around with the Golf Shop staff and the staff in general. His stories about arriving to Walloon by train with his brother-in-law and father-in-law from Cincinnati were fond family memories. His remembrances of climbing around the back of Masters Boat Works, admiring the boats while spending time at the foot were some of his fondest memories.
Bud was a faith filled man who supported many Catholic Church Organizations, Hospitals, Colleges, and High Schools. He was very generous to many of Walloon Lake Area Organizations. It wasn't known how charitable he was until a few years ago when a neighbor stopped in to confess to stealing beer out of "Mac's House" (garage) as a young person. His response was classic. You didn't steal it; I considered it advertising!
