Obituary

Lois Dean Phillips, 91, died Sunday, November 30 after a brief illness. Born in Milton, WVa, she grew up in the nearby town of Kenova, then trained as a bookkeeper in a local business college. She met her future husband, Ralph Phillips, at a defense plant in West Virginia during World War II and continued working as an office manager for churches as his mechanical engineering and equipment sales career took him to cities across the South and Midwest, including Cincinnati. They returned to Cincinnati when he retired in 1989 and settled in Montgomery. Mr. Phillips died in 1994, and Mrs. Phillips lived in their Montgomery home until her death. She was a skilled quilter who won prizes for her work, including a second place at the Ohio State Fair. She also enjoyed knitting tiny hats and booties for premature babies born in Greater Cincinnati hospitals. A member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Kenwood, she participated in a neighborhood Bible study group and kept meticulous records of the scriptural passages that she studied every day. She is survived by her daughter, Lynda Phillips of Silverton and her son, Mike Phillips of Ft. Mitchell, KY, and daughter-in-law Nancye Moncrief Phillips. There will be a memorial service for Mrs. Phillips at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, 8645 Kenwood Rd., Kenwood. Memorial contributions are suggested to two of Mrs. Phillips' favorite charities: the international relief organization Samaritan's Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607, and Hospice of Cincinnati, Inc., P.O. Box 633597 Cincinnati, OH 45263-3597. Obituary story avaliable at the Cincinnati Enquirer online.
