Lois Ann Johnson Burke, inveterate bridge and Go Fish player; head cheerleader at her grandchildren's soccer, T-Ball, football, baseball and basketball games; avid concertgoer at her grandkids' band and Christmas concerts, with perfect attendance at every Grandparents Day; lover of music from Oscar and Hammerstein to Luciano Pavarotti to the Kingston Trio and John Denver; pantry keeper of the sour Gummy Bears and Fruity Pebbles; devoted viewer of "Cash Cab," "Junkyard Wars," and Fox News; hostess extraordinaire of an annual kickoff Christmas singalong party; tireless solver of the daily crossword; faithful attendee to her Rosary group; and known from a young age as "The General" for her take-charge, can-do attitude, passed away June 16, 2010, after a brief illness. She was 81. Lois is survived by her husband, Daniel J. Burke; children Kathleen (Gene) Williams, Richard Burke, Eileen (Carl) Sloane, Daniel (Suzanne) Burke and Paul (Leslie) Burke, and nine grandchildren, Andrew, Meghan, Patrick, Shane, Madeleine, Christopher, Kendall, William and Paige. Lois was a native of New York City, and graduated from Mary Louis Academy in 1946 and Fordham University in 1951, where she majored in education. She married Daniel Joseph Burke, also of Queens, New York, in 1952. In 1969, the family moved from Schenectady, N.Y., to Cincinnati. They lived in Montgomery and were members of All Saints Parish, where their younger children went to school. In 1987, Lois and Dan moved to Landen Lake in Deerfied Township, where, without fail, Lois would say every day, "I love this view" as she looked over the lake from her kitchen window. Her joy in life; her sense of humor and wonderful laugh; her long and detailed letters; her engaging conversations; her spirited arguments; her deep and loving connections with husband, her children and grandchildren; her nieces and nephews; her cousins; and her many, many friends, will be missed by all who knew her. We love you, Mom. You are now in God's loving hands. Friends may call at St. Margaret of York Catholic Church, 9483 Columbia Rd., Loveland, on Tuesday from 11:30 AM until Memorial Mass at 1 PM. Memorials may be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 350 Erkenbrecher Ave., Cincinnati, OH 45229.
