Obituary

Johnetta "Johnnie" Phillips (nee Parker), age 94, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 28, 2023 surrounded by her loved ones. She was a loving mother to Steven (Diana) Phillips and Scott (Paula) Phillips. Grandmother to Jaclyn Phillips, Benjamin (Amanda) Phillips, and Kelle (Randy) Mullins; great-grandmother to Maliyah Phillips and Parker Mullins.

Preceded in death by her husband of 75 years, Raymond Phillips, her parents George Dewey and Nannie Mae (Bentley) Parker, sisters Chris, Lillian, Edna, and Jean, and brothers George, Ray, and Jim.

Johnnie was born December 20, 1928. While attending Deer Park High School as a member of the class of 1947, she was very active in school clubs, and according to her yearbook, she was "As merry as the day is long." On June 19, 1948, Johnnie married her high school sweetheart, Raymond.

While living in Louisville, KY she was a member of the Calvin Presbyterian Church. She was also an avid Bridge player, a member of the Rosie Reds, and enjoyed going to as many games as she could. In 1985, she and Ray were in attendance when Pete Rose hit his record breaking 4,192nd hit. Johnnie and her sisters delighted in going to garage sales and having sales at their houses. She was a very talented crafter, with stellar sewing, drawing, and painting skills, and enjoyed attending craft shows. She loved clowns because they brought laughter and happiness to the world; she made them and painted them, sold them, and gave them away. She made Halloween costumes for her grandchildren, and would join in on the fun, dressing up as Minnie Mouse or a clown. During winters, Johnnie and Ray spent their time in Florida – it was their special place.

Above all, was Johnnie's love of family. All of her brothers and sisters were very close, and gathered together often. Her cole slaw was a family favorite. She had special love for her grandchildren and kept in touch with her many nieces and nephews, always interested in their lives. Johnnie was always willing to help family and friends.

She was a loving and supportive wife, a loving and caring mother, a special grandmother, and adoring great-grandmother, a wonderful sister, a connected aunt, and a good friend to many. Johnnie blessed this earth with a positive and spirited outlook towards life, always with a reaching hand to help. She will be greatly missed.
