John Aloysius Leugers, 84 There is nothing like being enveloped in a wonderful hug and Dad was known far and wide for his generous hugs. His loving embrace is what many will most remember about him. His love of children was evident. To the very end he loved to get down on the floor and play with the babies at their own level. Music was one of his great joys in life. It was at an evening at the summer opera at the zoo he met his future bride, Mary Anne McDonald. They married in January 1951 and had 10 children, Ruth (Bill) Guentter, Anne (Elmer Lipp), Martha (Bill) Encherman, John (Teresa), Susan (Doug) Lehrer, Matthew (Maureen), Mark (Lori), Margaret (Duane) Shaw, Robert (Rebecca), Mary (Mac) Beeker, all of whom survive him. He has 26 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. John's work ethic was another defining characteristic. "If something is worth doing, it's worth doing well". Our father lived and taught that philosophy, and his attention to detail was apparent in every thing he did from homebuilding to model ship building to computer programming. John served in the Navy in WWII, graduated from Xavier U. in business and attended Georgetown University for his graduate work. During his life he worked first as a general contractor and then a programmer and systems analyst for Univac and other companies. He was one of 9 children and is survived by 2 brothers, Paul and David. Some of his favorite memories are of his beloved Leelanau peninsula where he and his family went for their summer vacations. He wandered "the back way" to the beach many a time to discover beautiful vistas. Perhaps his greatest gift was being a quiet inspiration for all of us. He was an active member of the Bellarmine Chapel community. Mass of Christian burial will be held at Bellarmine Chapel at Xavier University at 5:30 PM Tues. Dec. 13, with viewing at the chapel 4:00-5:00PM. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to: National Religious Retirement Office, 3211 Fourth St. NE, Wash DC 20017-1194.
