Obituary

John B. Hart, Dedicated Teacher and Scholar John B. Hart, retired Professor of Physics, Xavier University, and retired Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy, died quietly in his sleep at his home on the Xavier Univ. Campus on January 25, 2007. He was 82. He is survived by his wife, Verna Lee Gibson Hart, his daughter, Mary Agnes Hart McLain, and two grandchildren: Stefanie Lynn McLain, and Cody Thomas McLain. John Hart retired as Professor of Physics at Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio in 1999 after fifty years of teaching and serving as Chairman. He taught physics at the University of Cincinnati, was a visiting Professor at Florida State University, Consulting Professor at Ohio University, taught a special course on Advanced Physical Science at Miami University, and was an AIAS Professor based at Xavier University. He taught seminars on hypnosis to physicians, surgeons, dentists, and psychologists in San Francisco and Los Angeles CA. At the request of James Cissell, then the Attorney General of Southern Ohio, he gave a one-day special seminar on hypnosis to his judges and law staff at Miami University, Ohio. Professor Hart organized and managed a weeklong conference on the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen Effect at Xavier University, Ohio. Professor Hart gave talks on science, mathematics, and hypnosis on a local public TV station, one of which was replayed in Australia and Canada on a commercial station. He also holds a patent on a "frictionless" bearing. John Hart served as an officer in the U.S. Navy on Destroyer Escorts in the Pacific toward the end of WW-2. Serving as an Executive Officer, Communications Officer, and Anti-Submarine Warfare Officer, he continued in the U.S. Naval Reserve for 26 years until retirement. As a reservist, he taught navigation at reserve officer training schools in Newport, R.I., Long Beach, CA, and Treasure Island, CA. during the summer time. He had reserve duty at many navy stations such at the Michelson Laboratory in the Mohave Desert, Edwards AFB CA, Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. and Co-authored National Curriculum in navigation for the Navy Dept. He was commanding officer of U.S. Naval Research Reserve Unit that met at Xavier University and the local Naval Reserve Training Center. HONORS: Aside from some local honors, he was most proud that Myron W. Evans proclaimed him the Father of the AIAS House. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 1, 10:30 A.M., at the Bellarmine Chapel, Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio. His family has suggested that memorials be sent to the American Cancer Society, 2808 Reading Rd., Cinti, OH 45206 or the Xavier University Physics Department, 3800 Victory Pkwy, Cinti, OH 45207.
