Obituary

Ranaghan Joan Augustine (nee Lombardi), 89, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 6, 2016. Her husband of 48 years, William L. Ranaghan, predeceased her in 1998. She is survived by her four loving children Bill Ranaghan, of Cincinnati, OH; Julie Rowekamp (Len) of Park Hills, KY; Tim Ranaghan (Ann) of Mason, OH; and Kathleen Thomas (Scott) of Coral Springs, FL and six grandchildren: Tony Ranaghan, Angela Ranaghan, Emily Rowekamp, Lenny Rowekamp, Stephanie Thomas and Sara Thomas. She is also survived by her brothers, Ted Lombardi (Rosa) of Valrico, FL and Ray Lombardi (Dottie) of Lighthouse Point, FL as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. Born in Cincinnati, Joan enjoyed the benefits of Catholic education from grade school through college. She earned her BS in Chemistry from Our Lady of Cincinnati College (later to be known as Edgecliff College and now subsumed under Xavier University) planning for a career in that field. However, when WWII ended, those jobs went to returning servicemen and she turned to teaching at McNicholas High School in Cincinnati until she married in 1950. Joan was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and sister. Although small in stature, she was strong of faith and purpose. She devoted her life to her family, who will miss her dearly. Although, she lived in Pompano Beach, FL for 58 years, she always considered Cincinnati 'home'. She returned to the area in 2014 and enjoyed living at St. Charles Community where she was very happy and very well cared for. Visitation will be Monday, Sept. 12 from 5:00 8:00 PM and Tuesday, Sept. 13 from 9:00 10:00 AM at Gilligan Funeral Home, 2926 Woodburn Ave., Cincinnati, OH. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM at St. Francis de Sales Church on Madison Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Francis de Sales School, 1600 Madison Rd., Cincinnati, OH 45206, which was her grade school parish and the church in which she was married. Just as she passed on her strong Catholic faith to her family, she would be pleased to continue the tradition of Catholic education.
