It is with great sadness that the family of James Patrick Shanahan announces his passing away on September 26, 2018, of complications from Parkinsons Disease, which he bore with dignity for more than 20 years. Jim will be lovingly remembered by his children, Jim (Anne), Patty and Mike, by his grandchildren, Bizzie (Adam), Katie, Bailey, Maddie, Maggie, Gabbie, Jay, Alex, Michaela and Catherine, his brothers-in-law Bill (Peg) Kipp, Dave (Kay) Kipp and his sister-in-law Judy Pater, and his many nieces and nephews and other family and friends. Jims parents, James and Thelma, his three sisters, Shelly, Carol and Marlene, his infant daughter Kathleen and his beloved wife of 57 years, Charlotte (died December 26, 2017), preceded him in death. A funeral mass will be held in memory of Jim at Guardian Angels Church, 6539 Beechmont Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45230 on October 1, 2018, at 10:30 am, preceded by a visitation starting at 9:00 am. Interment will follow the funeral at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Cincinnati. Those who desire to do so may make a donation in memory of Jim to the Parkinsons Foundation or to Rock Steady Boxing of Indianapolis. Jim was born on April 4, 1933, in Norwood, Ohio to James and Thelma Shanahan. He graduated from Purcell High School, Xavier University, and Salmon P. Chase College of Law. An ROTC student at Xavier, Jim served as a lieutenant in the US Army at Fort Sill in Oklahoma. After leaving the army, Jim married the love of his life, Charlotte Kipp, in 1960. Jim and Char lived in Mt. Washington, where they had four children, Jim Jr., Patty, Mike, and Kathleen, who died an infant. Jim spent most of his career at the Union Central Life Insurance Company, where he was the first Catholic to be promoted to a corporate officer, and ran the pension and annuity business at American United Life in Indianapolis with great success from 1982 until his retirement in 1998. Jim was active in his community, including serving as Treasurer and President of the Anderson Hills Swim and Tennis Club, as President of the Parish Council at Guardian Angels, as a Eucharistic minister at Guardian Angels and St. Simon the Apostle and on the Finance Committee for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis.
