Obituary

JAMES DANIEL OGLE Feb. 16, 1920 Dec. 28, 2009 Beloved husband of Cora Glassmeyer Ogle for 36 years. Also survived by his first cousin, Sister Mary Josetta Mayer, two brothers-in-law, and two sisters-in-law, as well as 13 nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews. Dr. Ogle received a B.S. in Chemistry from Miami University, then a Masters Degree in Chemistry from the University of Cincinnati. During WWII Jim served in the Army Air Corps. He was stationed in the Philippines where his job was to make maps of the region. His unit was en route to Japan on a mission to take aerial photos for mapping purposes when the War ended. However his unit was still being bombed by Japanese renegades who were unaware that the war was over. After the War Jim continued his education and received his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Cincinnati. He did post doctorate work at Yale University prior to returning to UC as a professor in the Department of Biochemistry. Jim taught medical students for many years and simultaneously conducted an active research program. He discovered the amino acid 3- hydroxyl proline (part of the structure of collagen). He was a member of the American Chemical Society and other professional societies. During his career Jim traveled around the world to seminars sharing valuable information on neutrophil functions in burn and trauma patients. He and his wife Cora coordinated research projects for many years, co-investigating the immune system after burn and trauma. Jim was an avid (and skilled) tennis player for most of his life. He was also passionate about jazz and a frequent patron of jazz events throughout the city, most especially at UC's College Conservatory of Music. In his latter years he acquired a large jazz collection by downloading jazz through itunes. Anyone arriving at Jim and Cora's home would be greeted by the sound of music he had cd players everywhere in the kitchen, bedrooms, computer room, living room. Jim was also a dedicated Bearcat fan. He was able to attend every home game this season, with the exception of the last one, which he watched at home. Jim loved cats his own pet kitties that he affectionately referred to as "the boys", as well as the cheetahs at the Cincinnati Zoo. He was fascinated by their beauty, speed and graceful movement and frequently attended cheetah runs. Jim's mind was sharp until the end. If you asked him what he was reading he would respond with something like The Story of -1 (The square root of negative 1) or The Theory of Pi. Jim was a member of The Cincinnati Country Club, The University Club, Cincinnati Tennis Club, and The Camargo Hunt. Those who knew Jim on a personal level will always remember his boyish grin and wonderful sense of humor. He will be missed by all.
