Jacquie Cosgrove saw the best in people; the consummate hostess to the last She loved bittersweet chocolate, Central Park and people. Jacquie Mahoney Cosgrove made friends easily and remembered them faithfully for seventy-two years. Her gentle kindness and ability to quote Shakespeare and Cher in equal measure made her the center of an ever-expanding circle of friends as diverse in background as in location. Once you met Jacquie, you were a friend forever. As accomplished as she was popular, Jacquie received three scholarships but turned them all down to go to St. Mary-of-the-Woods College where she would become president of the student body. She traveled through Europe before settling down to teach English and raise a family in Cincinnati. And she never missed the chance to make a friend along the way. "Jacquie was extraordinarily good at connecting with extraordinary people," said Don, her husband of 45 years. "She saw the best in people and quickly became the best of friends." One of the great newspaper article clippers of all time, Jacquie preferred hand-written notes to forwarded e-mail. Friends and family from far and wide were "clipped" with articles she thought might be of interest. A fan of Fox News, detective shows and movies, she could laugh at herself and her fascination with the details and drama of human interaction. She would often return home from her Monday and Wednesday workouts at the gym "spent" from trying to exercise and socialize at the same time. Even during her final week in the hospital, Jacquie thwarted all attempts to limit her people time. The consummate hostess to the last, she insisted on holding court to a constant parade of visitors. Her reply to the doctor who had the difficult task of telling her that her condition was critical and incurable was typical of her concern for the feelings of others. "You are the best bearer of bad news," she said. She loved unconditionally and passed peacefully at Jewish Hospital on Monday, October 15th, surrounded by her family. She is survived by her husband, children, grandchildren and so many "best friends." Jacquie was the mother of six and grandmother to nine.
