Herman Doc Eckstein passed away peacefully on November 29th at the Lodge Care Center. He will be dearly missed by his beloved wife of 68 years, Frances Eckstein (Lang), his children Michael H. Eckstein (Jane), Marcia Eckstein (William Smith), Martin Eckstein (Carol Bernstein), Joseph Eckstein (Terri), John Eckstein (Judy), James Eckstein (Tammy), his grandchildren Rachel Simon, Michael A. Eckstein, Tess Eckstein, Neal Eckstein, Nathan Eckstein, Lillian Eckstein, Sarah Eckstein, Kate Ramser, Jennifer Eckstein, Benjamin Eckstein, Daniel Eckstein, Ethan Eckstein, Claire Eckstein, August Eckstein, Gabriel Eckstein, Joseph Eckstein, Samuel Eckstein and great-grandchildren Stella Simon, Blake Simon, Avery Eckstein, Michael O. Eckstein, Emma Eckstein. Doc was born on May 28, 1926 in Chicago, IL. He served in WWII in the European Theater of Operations and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. He married Frances C. Lang on October 15, 1949. He was a member of St. Gertrudes Parish in Madeira, and helped with gardening there after his retirement from the Celotex Corporation where he had worked for 52 years. At his retirement, he was Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing. Doc has been a member of the Cincinnati Nature Center for 47 years and served as a docent and on their board. He was an avid reader and gardener, amateur naturalist and conservationist. Our familys love of nature and respect for the environment are the result of his guidance and example. He was never happier than when he was teaching a child about the natural world. Visitation at Gilligan Funeral Home, Kenwood, Ohio Sunday, Dec. 3, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Funeral Mass at St. Gertrude Parish, Mon Dec 4th at 9:30 a.m. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the St. Gertrudes School Tuition Assistance, 6543 Miami Avenue, Madeira, OH 45243 or the Cincinnati Nature Center.
