Obituary

Herbert F. "Bud" Schmaltz, 84, was called to the arms of the Lord December 7, 2024 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years Patty (nee Hansberry), children Debbie (John) Marcus, Michael, and Julie (James) Mitchell, grandsons Kevin, Ryan, Zachary, Tyler and Kyle, brother Robert (Tim Mount), sister-in-law Mary Jo (Don) Lemmer, brother-in-law John (Suzette) Hansberry along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father Joseph, mother Dorothy (nee Frietsch), brother Joseph, Jr., and Sister Marie Camille, O.S.F.

Bud built a professional career in allocations management with toy companies Kenner, Tonka and Hasbro through 30 years and later in a similar role with Respiratory Care Resources. He earned an Associate's degree from the University of Cincinnati after graduating as a proud Purcell High School Cavalier.

He lived enjoying the many blessings of long-lasting friendships formed during his time as a lifelong parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church in Deer Park, his high school and college years, early married life on South Berkley Circle in Silverton where he and Patty were welcomed by friendly neighbors known as the "Berkley Bombers," his professional life and the acquaintances of his children.

Dedicated to exploring the mysteries and celebrating the traditions of the Roman Catholic Church, he served St. John's parish as a Lay Eucharistic Minister of Holy Communion and member its Finance Committee. He also was an active member of the parish Dad's Club and longtime player in its golf league. Bud additionally enjoyed visiting the Sisters of St. Francis chapel and convent in Oldenburg, Ind., and was able to travel to Vatican City in 2000.

Beginning with his eighth-grade year at St. John's, he dedicated 50 years to coaching youth football and baseball for Catholic Youth Organization Eagles teams in addition to multiple District 7 Knothole teams. He also umpired youth baseball for many years. He was known for bringing a unique energy to third-base coaching while mixing a melodic whistle with encouraging chatter as he precisely flashed signs to hitters. He was especially proud to have coached Dallas Cowboys National Football League Hall of Fame quarterback Roger Staubach along with Cincinnati Reds Major League Baseball Hall of Fame shortstop Barry Larkin and enjoyed closely following their achievements. Bud also was the longtime public address voice of Eagles football and the annual Deer Park Thanksgiving Day Turkey Bowl rivalry matchup between St. John's and neighboring St. Saviour.

He was a sports enthusiast and avid, faithful fan of the University of Notre Dame, Ohio University, Manchester University, Xavier University and Archbishop Moeller High School athletics programs. He crewed the down markers for Moeller Crusaders football for several years as well as the Kentucky Speedway press box with his son, Michael. He was a constant at his children's and grandsons' baseball, basketball, football, lacrosse, softball, volleyball and wrestling contests. He additionally enjoyed supporting their choral and musical concerts.

He took many opportunities to travel with family and friends, spending many summer vacations on Hilton Head Island, S.C. He possessed a diverse musical taste with special affinities for jazz, pops and classical.

Family and friends will be welcomed to a visitation Friday, December 13, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Gilligan Funeral Home in Kenwood. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, December 14, at St. John the Evangelist Church in Deer Park.
