Obituary

Harold Walton Estill, husband of the late Katharine McLean Estill, father of Eric Estill (Catherine), Lee Estill (Cherie) and Nancy Estill Tippmann, grandfather of Alex Estill (Emily), James Estill (Sarah), Chad Estill, Nathan Estill, Chloe Tippmann Walton (Cameron), Christopher Tippmann (Tara) and Cole Tippmann, great-grandfather of Ethan, Henry and Eleanor Estill, brother of Carolyn Estill Florence, Allen Estill, Ethel Estill Seitz, Milford Estill and Frances Estill Rankin. Departed Tuesday, January 12, 2021 at the age of 99. Harold (Hal) was born in Montgomery County, Kentucky and grew up on the land that is now the Kentucky Horse Park. He worked several jobs to pay for his education at the University of Kentucky where he studied engineering. He was called to active duty in the US Army Air Corps during his sophomore year. He was based in England and flew combat missions over Europe as a bombadeer. He served in the 350 Bomb Squadron and the well-known 100th Bomb Group. He also served with the occupational forces in Germany at the end of WWII. After returning to the states, Hal completed his undergraduate degree at UK. He soon began working for Westinghouse Electric Corporation in Philadelphia, where he also met and married Katharine (Kitty) McLean. Hal, Kitty and their baby, Eric, moved to Cincinnati in 1954 where Hal began a career with General Electric Aircraft Engines that would last for over 30 years. In Cincinnati, they had two more children: Lee and Nancy.Hal loved model trains and designed an elaborate train display in his basement. He happily shared this display with his children, grandchildren and visitors. He remained active in the 100th Bomb group, and hosted a national meeting in Cincinnati in the 1990s. Hal loved to putter: gardening, building and updating the family's house and property. After retiring, he bought a horse farm with his son, Eric, and daughter-in-law, Catherine. He loved to work in the pastures and barns.Hal and Kitty spent their most recent years at Evergreen Retirement Community where they felt at home and were well cared-for.Due to the recent rise in COVID-19 cases, immediate family members will have a private service for Hal at Rest Haven Memorial Park on Tuesday, January 19 at 3:00 PM.
