Obituary

George W. Newman III, age 75, passed away on September 23, 2015. He was married to Mary Elizabeth (Betsy Kyte) Newman and was the father of George W. Newman IV, Charles Laurence (Trisha) Newman, Mary Elizabeth Newman, and John Henry Newman, Grandfather of Charles Smith Newman and brother of James O. Newman (Surita) and the late Gay (Thomas) Tully. George attended the University of Vienna in Vienna, Austria, and graduated from Georgetown University. He attended the University of Cincinnati Law School and graduated with a Juris Doctor degree. He then became the third generation to enter the family leather business in Cincinnati which was founded in 1919 by his father and grandfather. In 1967, he moved to Boston and started his own business after negotiating an exclusive contract with E.I. Du Pont to purchase and distribute Corfam(r) to a worldwide market and eventually the Soviet Union became his largest customer. In 1971, he established his own plant in southern Maine and in 1987 he moved his production to Indiana and eventually became the second largest producer of bonded leather in the world. After selling the business in 1994, he concentrated his efforts to rehabilitating older industrial buildings and won two awards for innovative construction technology and historic preservation. While in Boston, he received an Honorary Doctor of Law degree from Emanuel College where he served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for nine years. He was an incorporator and Trustee of Beverly Hospital, Beverly, MA and also served as a Trustee of the Two Ten National Foundation and the University of New England, Biddeford, ME. After George returned to Cincinnati in 1987, he served as a Trustee of the Fountain Square Fools and was a trustee and Vice President of Development of the Cincinnati Opera. He will be remembered by family and friends as kind and gentle and having a great sense of humor. We will all miss him dearly.
