IN LOVING MEMORY OF
George Merton
"Gibby" Gibson
May 27, 1934 – July 14, 2025
George Merton "Gibby" Gibson (May 27, 1934 – July 14, 2025) of Cincinnati, Ohio and Naples, Florida died peacefully on July 14, 2025. He was 91 years old.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Elsa "Punch" Gibson and their children, Judith TenEyck (Kirk) of Cincinnati and George "Matt" Gibson (Emily) of Missoula, Montana; five grandchildren, Emily TenEyck (Tyler Evans) of Washington, D.C., Peter TenEyck of San Francisco, California, Christopher TenEyck of New York City, New York, Caroline TenEyck of Washington, D.C., and Charlotte Gibson, of Missoula; two step-grandchildren, James Bentley, of Missoula, and Georgia Bentley, of Missoula; and great-granddaughter Louisa Evans, of Washington, D.C.
George was born in Kirkwood, Missouri to George Merton Gibson Sr. and Helen Catherine Peck in 1934. His family later moved to Chicago, where he attended Loyola High School.
He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1956 with a bachelor's of science and commerce and accepted a job at Procter & Gamble Company. After serving for three years as a lieutenant in the Navy's Pacific fleet, he joined P & G full time in 1960.
His late sister Katherine (Gibson) Silliker set him up on a blind date with Elsa in 1960, and they married at St. Benedict's Catholic church in Chicago in 1961. Gibby's career at P & G took them from Chicago to Staten Island and Toronto before they landed finally in Cincinnati, where they raised their family.
At P & G, Gibby rose quickly. During his career, he held various titles, including vice president, comptroller and treasurer. Respected for his keen intellect, even temperament and quiet self-assurance, he was credited by former P & G Chairman John Smale for shepherding the creation of the company's employee stock ownership program. He held positions on several corporate and nonprofit boards, and took special satisfaction as a director of Gibson Greeting Cards (no family relation), trustee of Xavier University, and board volunteer for the Conservancy of Southwest Florida.
Gibby and Elsa retired to Naples in 1991, where he played golf and fished the mangrove estuaries. They maintained a healthy network of long-time friends and kept up an active social life, often entertaining northern friends in Naples. Gibby was an avid outdoorsman, and he delighted in the camaraderie of several P & G colleagues who made an expedition to Alaska together each summer for over 20 years. With Elsa, he traveled the world, often in the company of their children and grandchildren.
