Obituary

S.J., Fr. Robert L. Dolan 'Padre Roberto' was called to enjoy eternal life on December 17, 2015 at the Jesuit Community of St. Camillus in Wauwatosa, WI.. He was 71 years old, a Jesuit for 53 years and a priest for for 42 years. Bob was born on June 30, 1944, in Cincinnati, Ohio, one of eight children born to J.Vincent and Adele Dolan. He entered the Chicago Province of the Society of Jesus on August 8, 1962, at Milford, Ohio. He was ordained on June 16, 1973, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and took final vows on October 3, 1976, in Tacna, Peru. Before entering the Society, Bob graduated from St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, Ohio. Fr. Bob worked in Peru all of his Jesuit life. He was a pastoral assistant and taught adult education in Ilo, a city in the Moquegua region of Peru (1976-1981). He did pastoral ministry, CLC work, and university youth ministry in Lima, Peru (1981-1988). He was the assistant pastor and (eventually) pastor of San Juan Baptist de Jarpa in Huancayo, Peru (1988-1998). He was counselor at Colegio de la Inmaculada in Lima, Peru (1994-2003 and 2010-2013). He worked at Colegio Cristo Rey in Tacna, Peru (2003-2010). Bob/Padre Roberto also was procurator for the Peruvian Province (1994). In 1964, Bob Dolan was one of the first novices from the Chicago Province to be assigned to Peru; he spent most of the rest of his Jesuit life there. He was known among the Peruvian Jesuits as one who was available for any assignment he was asked to do. This open disposition led him to work with those in the greatest need both on the coast and in the high Peruvian mountains. On a couple of occasions his work brought him face-to-face with members of the Shining Path, the terrorist group that held the country hostage in the 1980s. His final assignment in Peru was minister of the community at the Peruvian flagship school in Lima, the Inmaculada. There he was known for his work with parents and students, especially in the area of sacramental preparation. During his 2014 health sabbatical (cancer) in Chicago, Fr. Bob - who was an avid walker - was struck by an automobile while he was in a crosswalk (September 18, 2014). After hospitalization and intense neurological rehabilitation, Bob was assigned (January, 2015) to the St. Camillus Jesuit Community in Wauwatosa, WI.. Fr. Bob dealt with his illness and the accident with the same faith and grace with which he approached life as a Jesuit in service of others. He is survived by four sisters and three brothers: Thomas (Pam) Dolan of Cincinnati, Ohio; Patricia Dolan K-St.Clair of Everson, Washington; Barbara Dolan Meinert of Atlanta, Georgia; Donald(Ruth) Dolan of San Antonio, Texas; Maridel (Richard) Felger of Cincinnati, Ohio; Jerome (Linda) Dolan of Homestead, North Carolina; Maureen (Steven) Schwab of West Chester, Ohio; Jesuits in the Peru Province, the Chicago/Detroit Province and the Wisconsin Province as well as many dear friends in Peru and the Midwest. A Funeral Mass was held on Dec. 21 at the San Camillo Chapel, Wauwatosa, WI.. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held January 9, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at Bellarmine Chapel at Xavier University, Cincinnati, Ohio, followed by a reception and then private burial at the Jesuit Cemetery in Milford, Ohio. In accordance with the wishes of the immediate family and the Jesuits, anyone who would like to offer a tribute in memory of Fr. Robert Dolan may send a memorial gift to Jesuit International Missions c/o Midwest Jesuits, 2050 N. Clark St., Chicago, Illinois, 60614. Include a note, "in memory of Fr.
