Obituary

Ewa Swisterski was born in Lwow, Poland, in November of 1917. Her two older sisters fought over caring for her and at one time dumped her in a creek as they struggled about pushing the baby carriage! She survived that, the bombing of her town by the German air force, and fleeing through the mountains during winter with her new husband, to join Polish resistance forces. The WWII aftermath included survival in several countries and a search for resettlement. She immigrated to the USA to New York City with her husband, Peter and daughter, Christina in 1955. She has left memoirs of these experiences and mentions that they lived many countries including the West Indies where Peter served the British government as a physician, in a program similar to our Peace Corps. Through school and travel she acquired seven languages: Polish, French, Italian, German, English, Yugoslavian, and Hungarian. They settled in Warren, Ohio where she was active in numerous volunteer activities. As a young girl she had helped others when she translated books into brail and also taught the servants in the house to read. In Warren, she was president of the local medical auxiliary and volunteered in the hospital gift shop. She was also involved with the YWCA. Ewa also had a gift for interior design and their home was always beautifully decorated. When her husband Peter, a.k.a. Kazik, retired from medical practice in 1980, they moved to St. Pete Beach. She and her husband of 65 years traveled internationally each year on vacation. She was an avid tennis player and skier till her mid 70's and both enjoyed sailing in local waters. Peter and Ewa walked two miles on the beach each day until 2003. She and her husband also volunteered locally with the St. Pete Beach "Meals on Wheels." Her daughter, Christina Jordan, (Ika) is married and lives in Cincinnati, Ohio. Ewa has two grandchildren: Phillip Jordan of Los Angeles and Jackie Jordan of New York. Jackie and her husband have adopted two daughters from China, Sofia and Maya. In her memoirs, Ewa mentions that a teacher told her that she would be "an apostle of joy." She appears to have lived that prediction and was known for passing on a good word of encouragement to those around her.
