Obituary

Ervin A. Stadler was so proud to be an accountant that his vanity license plates read "CPA-1." Twice appointed to the Accountancy Board of Ohio - by Gov. John Gilligan in 1972 and Gov. James A. Rhodes in 1976 - Mr. Stadler said his biggest thrill was signing the CPA certificates of three of his sons. The retired partner at Haskins & Sells, predecessor to Deloitte & Touche LLP, died of cancer Saturday, July 5th at Hospice of Cincinnati in Blue Ash. The Sycamore Township resident was 91. Although he retired in 1974, "Erv," as he was called by his friends, could be found at his desk in the office nearly every day for the next 25 years. Mr. Stadler became a CPA in 1945 and joined Haskins & Sells, an international public accounting firm, a decade later. He was certified to practice in Ohio, Kentucky, New Youk, Louisiana and North Carolina. A lifelong cinicnnatian, Mr. Stadler attended St. Xavier High School when it was located downtown. He played football, basketball and baseball there and at Xavier University, where he earned a bachelor's degree. He used to ask his friends, "who else do you know majored in Latin and Greek and became a CPA?" But he did take every accounting course offered at the University of Cincinnati. Mr. Stadler was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the National Association of Accountants, the American Accounting Association, the American Arbitration Association and Beta Alpha Psi, the national accounting fraternity. He was also a member of the Cincinnati Club - and a trustee and treasurer - and a director and treasurer of Clovernook Country Club. He was named Cincinnati Club Man of the Year in 1980. Survivors include: Rosemary McCarren Stadler, his wife of 66 hears; five sons, Paul of Lexington, Richard of Carmel, Ind., Thomas of New Canaan, Conn., James of Muncie, Ind., and John of Evendale; a daughter, Suzanne Thompson of Sacramento, Calif.; 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Memorials: Ervin A. Stadler Accounting Scholarship, Xavier University Office of Development, 3800 Victory Parkway, Cincinnati 45207.
