Obituary

Edwin Lawrence "Larry" Mongan, Jr., retired DuPont engineer, of Newark, DE., died at Brandywine Assisted Living at Longwood on Wednesday, September 8, 2010, after a long illness. He was 91. A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mr. Mongan attended Purcell High School and received his B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Cincinnati in 1942, studying under Professor Reuben Tour. At Cincinnati he was a member of Phi Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa, Tau Beta Pi, Alpha Chi Sigma, and Phi Lambda Upsilon, Vice President of the Engineering Tribunal and Captain of the fencing team. From 1942 to 1945 he served in the United States Navy as a junior officer in the pacific theater, among other duties helping to demagnetize warships to protect them from Japanese mines. On his return from Navy service Mr. Mongan undertook postgraduate studies in engineering while serving as an instructor at the College of Engineering of the University of Cincinnati. He met and married Mary Josephine Jansen, also of Cincinnati, in 1949. In 1951 Mr. Mongan joined the engineering staff of E.I. DuPont de Nemours & Company, moving first to Louisville, Kentucky and later to Newark, Delaware. With DuPont he was involved in many developments related to production of chemicals used in polymer materials until his retirement in 1986 as Principal Consultant. In 1985 was recognized as a distinguished alumnus by the College of Engineering and Applied Science of the University of Cincinnati. A longtime parishioner at St. John's Holy Angels in Newark, Delaware and St. Peter's Cathedral in Wilmington, Delaware, Mr. Mongan is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Jo, together with their eight children: Madeleine Mongan of Montpelier, Vermont, Edwin Lawrence Mongan III of Melbourne, Australia, Mary Beth Campion of Newark, Rosemary McCutchen of Rockville, Maryland, William Mongan of Malvern, Pennsylvania, John Mongan of Avondale, Pennsylvania, Daniel Mongan of Amagansett, Long Island and Ellen Mongan of Annapolis, Maryland; as well as seventeen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, September 15, 2010 at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Montgomery Road, Cincinnati, Ohio at 11:00 AM.
