Obituary

Edward Charles Ned Bruns, age 82, of Montgomery, Ohio, passed away Sunday, July 1st, 2018. He spent 54 years happily married to his darling wife, Caroline Sue, with whom he lovingly raised his five children, Tony (Michelle), Jim (Maggie), Ken (Lynn-Anne), Jan (Doug), and Debbie (Lars). Their family grew to include fifteen grandchildren, to whom he was a cherished grandfather; Peter, Nathan, Megan, Danny, Alec, Caroline, Cooper, Emma, Maya, Teddy, Peter, Tori, David, Ellie, and Andrew. Ned is preceded in death by his mother, Emma (Nieporte), father, Anthony, and sister, Betty, and was a devoted brother to Norb and Bob. Ned was born on April 5th, 1936 in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he would live his entire life. He attended school at Nativity Grade School and Purcell Marian High School where he developed many life-long friendships. He earned a Mechanical Engineering degree at the University of Cincinnati, and an MBA at Xavier. Ned was an inventor, engineer, and entrepreneur. He began his professional career at Cincinnati Milacron, where he was awarded the earliest of a number of patents he would accumulate. Alongside his brother, Norb, Ned purchased Lehr Precision Tools in 1967, a tool and die shop employing seven. Using their extensive knowledge in electro-chemical machining (ECM), in addition to machine tool design and build, they converted the business into an aerospace component manufacturer, shipping products around the world. During this time, Norb and Ned purchased a number of other businesses, including Arnold Gauge, a business venture they embarked upon with their brother, Bob. By 1996, when Lehr was sold, they employed a work force three hundred strong, and were globally influential in their industry. Ned met the love of his life, Sue, while he was donating blood at Good Samaritan Hospital. She was the phlebotomist. He was smitten and courted her until he won her hand in marriage on May 23rd, 1964. Ned was known for his sense of humor, boundless energy, generous spirit, and willingness to try just about anything. Ned and Sue traveled the world with family and friends, visiting all seven continents and forty countries. Ned loved to build and helped his children and grandchildren on many projects both big and small. At work, Ned would befuddle new coworkers with his unique vernacular including angle-ge-dangle (i.e. a board needs an angled cut) and gedunski (i.e. the job is done). A hard days work was followed by a wee dram of scotch to ease the aching muscles. He built and raced his own sailboat and loved to spend time on the water. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren at Elk Lake, Kentucky. Ned was very generous, giving freely of his time, treasure, and talent. Many were touched by his kindness. He was a positive influence on many peoples lives and he left the world a better place than he found it. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be considered for Hospice of Cincinnati which made Neds final hours peaceful ones, or the charity of your choice. Visitation will begin at 9am on Friday, July 6th at Good Shepherd Catholic Church on East Kemper Road. A Funeral Mass will follow at 10am.
