Edith M. Heaton, 97, passed away peacefully January 10, 2014 in Saint Charles, Missouri where she had recently moved to be near her daughter. Edith was born at home on July 18, 1916. She was the second oldest daughter of the seven children born to Anna Suer Merkt and Frank Merkt. Three of her siblings died before the age of three. Her brothers, Frank and Ray and sister, Alice Kramer Nordloh, preceded her in death. Her beloved husband, Edward G. Heaton Jr. "PaPaw" died in 1978. Edith was a graduate of Our Lady of Angels High School and the Cincinnati Secretarial Academy. A multitude of adjectives are necessary to describe this vibrant woman, wife, mother, sister, Grandma and friend. She was determined, bold, feisty, clever, thrifty, strong, forthright, funny and energetic. Her ability to stretch a dollar was beyond comparison. Edith never missed a chance to party and dance. She played her piano for hours. Her signature piece was "Ally Cat". She loved to travel, watch the Reds, sew, needlepoint and bake her famous pineapple up-side- down cake. Her cup was never half empty. Above all, she was a homemaker. She held various part-time positions at Proctor and Gamble for 38 years. She volunteered at the Parks Department, Zoo and Theater League and when you went to vote, there she was, working at the polls. Edith is survived by her three children: Eric (Jinx) St. Joseph, MI, Edward (Betty) Turlock, CA and Elaine Applegate, St. Charles, MO. also eleven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. The celebration of Edith's life will begin with visitation at the Gilligan Funeral home, 2926 Woodburn Ave., on Friday, January 17 from 4-7 PM. Catholic Mass will be held at Bellarmine Chapel on the Xavier University campus Saturday morning at 10AM with burial immediately following at Saint Mary's Cemetery, Holy Cross Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to Saint Rita's School for the Deaf in lieu of flowers.
