He is also survived by his sister, Bernadette (Bunny) Martin, his brother-in-law, Art Wilson, and sister-in-law, Margaret Colleen Brulport, by many nieces and nephews, and friends from all walks of life, including Hyde Park Seniors "the Y" and his friends and caregivers at Madonna Manor. Dutch, who until the past several years was a life-long resident of Cincinnati's East End Columbia Tusculum neighborhood, passed away on Sunday evening, March 14, at St. Elizabeth Hospice following a brief illness. He was 96. Dutch attended St. Stephen's Elementary School and was a 1931 graduate of St. Xavier High School. He married his wife, Caroline, August 19, 1939. He was a life-long member of St. Stephen's parish, where he was very active throughout his adult life, holding various volunteer positions, including president of the Holy Name Association and Parish Council and festival chair. He was also President of Purcell High School's Parents Club in 1961-62 and was a founding member of Purcell's Athletic Boosters Association. A familiar figure throughout the East End, he enjoyed his daily walks and visits with neighbors until he was in his 90s. He was a member of the First Ward Democratic Club and the East End Community Council (now the Columbia-Tusculum Community Council), and an active advocate for the interests of the East End neighborhood. After he went to live with his son, Chris, in 2006, he was commissioned an Honorary Kentucky Colonel, a distinction he treasured. Dutch, with two young sons and a third on the way, enlisted in the United States Navy in 1943. He was honorably discharged at the conclusion of WWII as a Pharmacist's Mate 3rd Class. He was active in the Catholic War Veterans for many years after his discharge. He retired from the Cincinnati Water Works in 1973 and worked part-time until the 1990s as a parimutuel clerk at River Downs and on Derby Day at Churchill Downs. He coached baseball and basketball teams, first managing a Marine Corps team at Camp LeJeune, NC, in 1944. In the 1950s, he began coaching Cincinnati Knothole teams in the East End. He coached teams of various ages until well into the 1970s. He worked to ensure that any youngster with an interest in playing ball had the opportunity to do so. Even in his 90s, he had fond affection for and great memory of many of his 'old ballplayers,' as they did of their 'coach'. When St. Stephen's decided to begin a youth basketball program in 1962, he stepped up to coach the first teams. He loved to travel to visit his family, and enjoyed weddings, baptisms, first communions, sporting events, family reunions and birthday celebrations. After his retirement, he and Caroline traveled frequently, including trips to Hawaii and Alaska he visited all 50 states and one memorable trip never forgotten, a Delta Queen cruise on his much loved Ohio River. Visitation will be on Friday, March 19 at St. Stephen Church, East End, from 10 AM until Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 AM. Interment will follow in Guardian Angels Cemetery. Memorials may be made to St. Stephen Church, 3804 Eastern Ave., Cinti 45226, Purcell-Marian High School, 2935 Hackberry St., Cinti 45206 or Madonna Manor, 2344 Amsterdam Rd., Villa Hills, KY 41017.
