Dr. Louis "Lou" O. Isabell, 92, passed away peacefully with his wife beside him on June 10, 2026, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Born on January 4, 1934, in Port Huron, Michigan, Lou was the son of the late George and Elizabeth (Reed) Isabell. He graduated from Port Huron High School, January 1952, and continued his education at Whitewater State University, (B.S.), University of Oklahoma (M.S.), and Washington State University (Ed.D.). Lou dedicated most of his professional life to education, serving as a professor at California State University, Chico, CA. He was respected by colleagues and students alike for his knowledge, and commitment to helping others learn and grow.
Lou married Carlene on June 4, 1988, in Paradise, CA.
A proud veteran, Lou served honorably in the Navy,1953-1957, Honorably Discharged as 1st Class Petty Officer. His service to his country reflected the same sense of duty, integrity and dedication that characterized his entire life.
Beyond his career and military service, Lou was best known for spending time with family, pursuing his favorite pastimes, or sharing stories and laughter with friends. He brought warmth and kindness to those around him. Lou also enjoyed golf, reading and Euchre.
Lou was also a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Port Huron, Michigan.

- Volunteer at King's Junior High School, Kings Mills, OH
- Avid golfer and member of Elk Rapids Golf Club, Elk Rapids, MI
Lou is survived by his beloved wife Carlene (Bettinger-Coulston); his children Katherine A. (Richard) Harrell, Lake City, MI; Scott D. (Tiffany) Isabell Chico, CA; Mark L. Isabell, Ridge Crest, CA; and step-children Harold E. "Chip" (Donna) Coulston, Boyne City, MI; Cindy (Rick) Mustard, Cincinnati, OH; Bill (Angie) Coulston (Traverse City, MI; several grandchildren, one great granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews. Lou was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Eugene, George and Harvey, and sister Bettyjane.
Lou's life was marked by his devotion to his family, service to his country and a lifelong passion for learning and teaching.
A memorial service is being planned at a future date at Grace Episcopal Church Columbarium, Port Huron, Michigan. Memorial donations may be made in Lou's memory to the American Heart Association or Grace Episcopal Church, Port Huron, Michigan.
