Donald J. Thielemann, former Mattoon Sears Store Manager, died January 4 at age 82 of complications from a stroke suffered in 1984. At the time of his death, he resided in The Beechwood Home, Cincinnati, OH. An Illinois native, he served in the Navy during WWII and later graduated from Northwestern University. He married Grace Harney on June 10, 1950 before joining Sears Roebuck that year and subsequently holding management assignments throughout the Midwest. He moved to Charleston in 1979 as Store Manager after serving in that position for the Muncie, IN store from 1965 to 1979 during which he opened the first store in the Muncie Mall. He was also on the Board of Directors of Muncie Federal Savings & Loan as well as the Chamber of Commerce, United Way, Boy Scouts, YMCA, Junior Achievement, Exchange Club, Visiting Nurses, Salvation Army and Ball State Parents Association. He was a member of St. Charles Catholic Church. He is survived by his wife Grace and their four children, Don (Paulette) Thielemann of Virginia Beach, VA, Carey (Dave) Criswell of Cincinnati, OH, Judy Tambourine of Marina del Rey, CA, Rick (Janette) Thielemann of Steamboat Springs, CO and 6 grand children, Jessica, Jordan & Lauren Criswell and Amanda, Katherine & Matthew Thielemann. He has three surviving brothers, George of Florida, John of Illinois, and Fred of Montana. Memorials may be made to The Beechwood Home, 2140 Pogue Avenue, Cincinnati, OH 45208. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
