IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Charles Joseph
Schare
April 20, 1934 – October 1, 2025
Charles Joseph Schare passed away peacefully with his children present and surrounded by their love. Dr. Schare was a man known for kindness towards others, sharp sense of humor and his brilliant mind. Born to Italian immigrants in Cincinnati's Little Italy in the South Fairmount neighborhood, he persevered and eventually earning a PhD in Chemistry. He was married for 63 years to the love of his life, a feisty Irish woman, our beloved Mom who preceded him in death in 2023. As a curious and intellectually gifted student at Saint Bonaventure School on Queen City Avenue, Charlie credited the wonderful nuns for recognizing his intellectual promise, and encouraged him to attend St. Xavier High School in Cincinnati, while working part-time at Rohs Hardware on Vine Street to pay for his tuition. As a student at St. Xavier, he was an honor student and a member of the National Honor Society. He went onto Xavier University and then to the University of Cincinnati for his final degree, his PhD. He started out as a professor of Chemistry at Our Lady of Cincinnati (later known as Edgecliff) where he made it his mission to encourage gifted women and minorities to pursue careers in the Sciences during the late 1960s and 1970s. He left academia to pursue a career in clinical chemistry, first at The Christ Hospital, then at Good Samaritan Hospital and ended his esteemed career as the Director of Laboratories at Cincinnati Children's Hospital. He was a hands-on Dad, changing diapers and feeding babies before it was considered a thing to even do. He told his children to follow their passions and not what seemed to be the most lucrative. He lived his life with joy and compassion for others and he loved his family more than anything. He will be greatly missed but we are grateful his suffering is over and he is reunited with our Mom and our sister, Jenny. Survived by his children Jeff (Lynn Babcock) Schare and Lisa (Eric Johnson) Schare Johnson, grandchildren Helen Jacobs and Grace Schare, Luke, Abigail and Natalie Cimpello. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara (Stuehrk) Schare, his parents Herman and Caroline (Ventre) Schare and his beloved daughter Jennifer (Jenny) Schare. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations can be made to St. Xavier High School or to the St. Vincent de Paul Society .
