Charles was born in Brooklyn, NY on April 30th, 1926 to Charles Michael Carroll and Mary Stojeba Carroll. Charles enlisted in the Marine Corp after Pearl Harbor at the age of sixteen by changing his birth certificate. Within in a few months he was aboard a converted Dutch freighter headed for the Pacific Islands. He went on to serve in the Korean War after which he was sent to Chinese Language School; the Corps then moved him into Military Intelligence in Taiwan. He spent 22 years in the service of our country before he retired in 1964 where he reached the rank of Major. He was a "Mustang" = given a meritorious Field Commission to 2nd Lieutenant in 1953.After retiring he worked at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft before moving to Cincinnati Public Schools in 1968 where he began a 20-year career, retiring as the Assistant Superintendent. Charles will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery with full Military Honors in the grave alongside his two departed wives. He was an extraordinary man and exemplified what a true American patriot looks like. He was the strongest man I've ever known and possessed "True Grit" right up until the end. He died as he lived, on his feet and in action. He will be sorely missed. Charitable donations can be made in his name to the Wounded Warrior Project.
