Barbara Cecelia O'Conor, 64, a resident of Southbury, CT passed away peacefully on Monday, March 11, 2013, surrounded by family members, fellow residents and caregivers. Born New Year's Eve, 1948, in Bronxville, N.Y., she was a daughter of the late John Francis and Margaret Henrietta (Fortune) O'Conor of Greenwich, Conn. and Santa Barbara, Calif. She was developmentally disabled, being diagnosed when young, with severe mental retardation. She attended the Woods School (now Woods Services) in Philadelphia, day programs in Greenwich, Conn. and, since November 1961, was a resident at Southbury Training School, Southbury, Conn. Barbara worked at various day programs including Leonardo's Italian Bistro and Bone Appetit. She thoroughly enjoyed intricate jigsaw puzzles, horseback riding, swimming and possessed a subtle and enviable sense of humor. She will be missed by her many friends among the residents and staff of the Southbury Training School and by her extended family. Barbara is survived by three brothers, John (Arlington, Va.), James (Arlington, Mass.) and Thomas (Northridge, Calif.); three sisters, Margaret Finucane (Boulder, Colo.), Jane Feeney (Fairfax, Va.) and Dorothy (Oxnard, Calif.), as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, March 15, at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 910 Main St. South, Southbury, CT. An interment service is scheduled for 11AM on Monday, March 18 at the family plot in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Connecticut arrangements by Carpino Funeral Home, Southbury. Donations, in lieu of flowers, may be made to the American Cancer Society.
