Obituary

Anthony John Schement, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2017. "Tony" was born in Cleveland, OH on July 12, 1930. The son of Italian immigrants, he was preceded in death by his parents, Emanuele and Francesca Valenza Schimmenti both originally from Polizzi Generosa Sicily, and his 8 siblings. Tony was a U.S. Army veteran serving in West Germany during the beginning of the Cold War.

After his service in the military, Tony graduated from Fenn College, worked in finance at U.S. Steel and received an MBA from Case Western Reserve. He was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. Tony pursued a career in banking, which brought him to Cincinnati where he advanced in various local financial institutions to become the president of Fahey Bank, Marion Ohio and later GE's Monogram Bank and Benchmark Federal Savings Bank.

Tony was an active sportsman throughout his life playing tennis and golf into his early 80s. As a youth he excelled at track and field and was the quarterback at West Tech High School. Tony would fish anywhere he could wet a line and was especially happy teaching his grandsons to fish. He was founding member of the Montgomery Woodsmen where he enjoyed many years of camaraderie playing golf, poker and socializing at the 19th hole.

Tony emphasized hard work and the importance of education. He was devoted to his loving wife and family. After retirement he volunteered helping those in need to prepare their income tax returns.

He enjoyed the simple things in life. He passed on the love of nature and all living things to his children. Whether dancing, walking, or just holding hands, his greatest joy was spending time with his wife Coleen. His greatest pride was not in his own achievements but in those of his children.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Coleen (nee Pearl), and his children Kathy Ligan (Warren), Suzan Brester (Peter), Mike Schement, Ph.D. (Shun). Grandchildren are Andrew Burke (Adrianne), Nick and Tony Brester and great grandchildren Sloan and Dagny Burke. He was fortunate to have step grandchildren Kim Fitzsimmons (Ryan), Tracy Hucker (Josh), Warren Jr and Christine De Carvalho and their children Jonathan, Colin, Grace and Ruby.

There will be a Mass of Christian burial followed by brunch at the Community of the Good Shepherd 8815 East Kemper Rd, Cincinnati, OH 45249 on Friday, October 27 at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 644 Linn St., Suite 1026, Cincinnati, OH 45203-1721.
