Obituary

Robert Oliver Case (Bob), 95, was the beloved husband of the late Marian Burke Case, devoted father of Robert A. Case (Mary-Suzanne), Leila A. Case (Charles Meyer), John G. Case (Karen), Mary Deirdre Case Patchen (Gregory), Pamela J. Case Stanger (Christoph), Maureen M. Case and the late Jennifer S. Case, loving grandfather of Carl Case, Sarah Case, Colleen Case, Scott Case, Michael Stanger, Aaron Grace, Alexa Stanger, Nicholas Stanger, and Thomas Stanger, fond step-grandfather of Philip Meyer, Katherine Meyer Bruffy (Kevin) and Evan Meyer, and step-great grandfather of Elliot and Whitney Bruffy. Born in Detroit, MI, he was the only child of Arthur B. Case and Elsie E. Watts Case.

When young, Bob lived with a caring farming couple in North Attleborough, MA, as his father's WWI injuries took him from Bob's life at an early age, and his mother worked to help support him. He attended St. Andrew's School in Barrington, RI, where he won the King Medal for his overall accomplishments and character. A natural athlete, Bob was high school captain of his football, basketball and baseball teams, and continued to play team sports in college, having declined an invitation to train with the Boston Red Sox. He was awarded an undergraduate scholarship to Brown University and earned a law degree at Columbia Law School.

Bob served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in General Eisenhower's SHAEF command headquarters during World War II in Europe. After law school he worked as an at-torney for the Department of the Navy in Washington DC, and later rose to the rank of captain as a JAG for the US Air Force Reserve in Chicago.

For the majority of his career he worked in private practice in Chicago, specializing in corporate and securities law, and started his own law firm which later became Walsh, Case, Coale, Brown & Burke. Bob completed his legal career, which spanned 55 years, as Of Counsel with Holland and Knight.

He and Marian were married in 1953. They made their family home in Deerfield, IL for 54 years, raising seven children and making many lifelong friends.

Always intellectually curious, Bob was an avid reader of history and biographies and loved to debate world affairs. He had many interests, and was passionate about golf and aviation. He flew his own plane after obtaining his pilot's license and instrument rating, and was active in the Lawyer-Pilots Bar Associ-ation, as well as periodically piloting free medical flights for the Angel Flight network. He was a long-time member of Exmoor Country Club, and served on its board of directors. He and his family enjoyed wonderful times at their vacation home in Green Lake, WI, as well as many winters on Jupiter Island, FL. Bob was dedicated to his family and always modeled the highest standards of integrity and hard work for his children. His engaging personality, clever wit and mastery of the pun were enjoyed by all who knew him, and he will be greatly missed.

Bob died peacefully in Cincinnati, Ohio, on February 11, 2017.

Services will be held at Holy Cross Church, Deerfield, IL, on Saturday March 18, 2017, with a Vis-itation at 9 am followed by a Memorial Mass at 10 am.
